How the frick do you not know by now after our responses to your stupid question? There are mountains there -- yes, a foot of snow in the mountains is normal. A foot of snow in the mountains of Hawaii is normal, too. Read a book now and then, won't ya?

Which book should I read? Surely someone with your vast knowledge of mountains and snow can put me on the right track!

I remember driving from the Northshore to Slidell in 2008 during the snow event with no problems. But I also remember I12 and I59 being closed for several days in 2014 due to ice. Wonder what we are going to have tomorrow morning? I have to travel in I12 and I59 everyday.

Most people don’t know that is the origin of the phrase “old man winter is coming.”

I still want to know if a foot of snow is normal or unusual that far South.

See, Jim, that's WAY better than some of the other responses. A picture is always better!

Can someone explain reinforcing shot of cold air? It always seems to happen, and I welcome it every time, but WHY does it happen?

Put simply, extremely cold air near the North Pole wants to move from west to east along the Arctic Circle due to the rotation of the Earth. Occasionally, that air gets blocked from traveling east, and it has nowhere to go but South.

A better question is: when was the last time it snowed SW of corpus, in the Rio Grande valley to Laredo?

Also, the coastal bend of TX could see a landfalling cat 4 hurricane and accumulating snow within just a few months of each other.

The last big snow for South Texas was Christmas Day 2004 when they got over a foot in places.

For today, Dallas is getting some surprise snow behind the cold front. Pretty easy to get light snow up here behind an Arctic front even when the air is pretty dry at the surface.

Radar across houston is bright yellow and orange. I ran outside to see if that means sleet... the verdict is no. Just big fat numerous cold raindrops.

Yellow and orange reflections are pretty damn rare for frozen precip. You'd hear the sleet like hail if it was falling that heavy.

Radar has a nice little rainshield showing up, indicating our gulf low is forming up on schedule. Looking forward to seeing the afternoon soundings from Lake Charles and Slidell.

I thought the reflectivity lights up when the beam hits frozen precip.

False.

They are extremely common. Sleet lights up a radar
