re: Big Cold Blast Coming - Increasing chances of ice/light snow flurries Tuesday afternoon - aggiegeog
This is looking like a light but significant event for me in East Texas. Rain changing to snow by late tomorrow evening and snow continues into Tuesday afternoon. I am looking at 1-3" with localized bands getting more. Temps in the mid 20s during the event with winds gusting to around 25 mph. Excit...

re: Winter thread: 3.5" officially in BR on the 8th day of meteorological winter!! - aggiegeog
The last big snow for South Texas was Christmas Day 2004 when they got over a foot in places. For today, Dallas is getting some surprise snow behind the cold front. Pretty easy to get light snow up here behind an Arctic front even when the air is pretty dry at the surface....

Models are showing cold starting middle of next week and persisting through at least mid month and likely beyond for everyone east of the Rockies. There is blocking developing over Greeenland (-NAO), Arctic (-AO), West Coast (+PNA) and Alaska (-EPO). For Texas, I am hoping to see a weaker PNA and NA...

re: Any ArcMap experts here? - aggiegeog
I agree with this, I am very glad I studied it while in school. Though I wish I could stay more up to date on the things I learned that I don't utilize everyday. It's errors and crashes can be very frustrating though it seems much more stable now than it used to be....

re: Am I weird for keeping up with the weather? - aggiegeog
Many forecasters and even hobbyist model hug too much. Upstream forecasting and knowledge past events are still critical skills. For instance last year featured many events where the cold air was dammed up on the Ouachita Mountains which slowed the cold from reaching areas near the Sabin River while...

re: Am I weird for keeping up with the weather? - aggiegeog
Yea that is pretty high level, but it was all picked up from following weather forums. I pride myself on putting out a more accurate long range forecast for my location than local guys and even NWS. I keep track of my forecasts vs what actual reports end up showing. I am thinking about starting to t...
I farm so I constantly keep up with it. People who get their weather info from local news people piss me off. Those guys don't know shite. Take NOAA and Accuweather forecasts and make your own assumptions using common sense and you'll be very close more often than not.
I like the NW...
Since your my weather bro, will that translate into better snow chances in SE Louisiana? I want some god damn snow.
I am seeing a 09-10 type winter when us in East Texas got pounded with 4 or 5 snows; if I remember correctly Louisiana got some also along with many other areas....

re: Am I weird for keeping up with the weather? - aggiegeog
I am getting really pumped up about the upcoming winter. It may not be persistently cold like last year, but the atmosphere is setting up nicely for some big time snows in Texas. Last year featured a lot of shallow cold and pretty dry conditions; this year should feature deep cold troughs with a moi...

The physics of meteorology is what held me back. My specialty is using teleconnections to do long term forecasting. I spent a couple years in college doing a study on how teleconnections affect wildfire in the Smokey Mountains....

Yep, they tend to be very welcome to newcomers. Storm2k and AmericanWx are currently my faves. I have always been fascinated with weather (winter especially) and I started out majoring in meteorology at A&M, but decided I preferred it as a hobby more than a career....

re: Am I weird for keeping up with the weather? - aggiegeog
I tend to follow the weather closely. I even create almost daily and sometimes more often forecasts during the winter that I post to my weather page on Facebook. I also like to do long term forecasting for upcoming seasons. There are some awesome weather forums for us weather nerds to discuss our pa...
