For purposes of this discussion, let's say "our life time" is the next 40 years. As a British history buff, I appreciate the royal family and the tradition and charm they bring to the UK in general; however, there are those in the UK who feel they are nothing but an unnecessary drain on the public coffers. I predict popularity will diminish with the passing of the Queen. Charles doesn't have the same appeal.

Man, if I had to get my son to dress like that it would involve a fistfight. He thinks sweatpants are too fancy.

What happens if the elders all die and then all of Will and Harry's children are gay or sterile? Can a royal be adopted?

I think the royals are a net positive for society. They serve as a constant reminder if nothing else just how far we’ve gone down the shitter in acceptable attire. They may be pompous asses, but at least they’re well dressed pompous asses.

I suspect most brits recognize that the royal family generates huge $$$ in tourism, as well as harder to calculate $$$ derived from the ongoing concept of the British monarchy. There is a certain level of cachet for British products, landmarks, etc. that just won't be the same without it.

You say that, but the UK was the only European country to actually see a decline in tourism in 2018. While the rest of Europe saw a 6% increase in tourism, the UK saw a 5.3% decline. Now, London is still my wife's and my favorite destination in Europe with the monarchless-Paris a close second; however, the fact the Queen still sits on the throne has very little to do with it.

I would rather have actual royals that used to rule the country in history rather than the fricking Kardashians or Jenners or any of those people.

The Crown estate and it’s holdings brings in far, far, far more money to the British Treasury than they receive from parliament.

They own a large portion of the most valuable property in the UK, and most it not all of it generates a ton of wealth. Land development, shopping/retail, mineral and fishing rights, etc etc.

Then the crown passes to the oldest niece or nephew of the Windsor lineage.

I must say this possibility is wayyyyyy down my list of worries...

Yeah, I still think they are a minority. The people there eat it up.

Ceremonial functions, they are usually involved in government or public service at some level even though it is advisory. Some
are military. As you get farther away from the queen on the family tree, some just have normal jobs.

Plus they have an enormous amount of business interests to tend to.

They largely don’t just sit around and get fed grapes.
