I suspect most brits recognize that the royal family generates huge $$$ in tourism, as well as harder to calculate $$$ derived from the ongoing concept of the British monarchy. There is a certain level of cachet for British products, landmarks, etc. that just won't be the same without it.

Keep them as window dressing. I'd put them on a pretty strict budget. They might have to start cooking their own meals , and washing .their own dishes, in private.

What happens if the elders all die and then all of Will and Harry's children are gay or sterile? Can a royal be adopted?

It will end when the queen dies. Britisters don't want Chuck.

If Harry was the eldest i would agree; however, William seems like a pretty decent guy and Kate has been welcomed by the brits. William and Kate have saved that family from their downfall.

its been suggested that the Royals have a unifying aspect on society that bridges political and cultural difference.

Whether Conservative or Liberal, white, black etc. the Royal family is a shared relationship.

also Britan is not the ONLY country with royals, the Netherlands Denmark,Norway ,Sweden, Spain even Japan and a bunch of African nations

At over 1000 years old and being the oldest governing on the planet, I doubt it will come to an end unless the bloodlines die off.
