Why is the Beaumont/Port Arthur area such a dump?

Port Arthur looks like it should be a map on Call of Duty and Beaumont is a real shithole for the amount of opportunity it has in the area.
You can throw a rock in any direction and hit a good paying job. Plants/petrochemical, oilfield, offshore jobs, stevedoring, railroad, freight, etc... yet it seems like everyone is poor as shite or unemployed
I don’t know if there is any saving Port Arthur besides demolishing it and starting over, but Beaumont could be a nice place if they just put a little effort into cleaning it up and cracking down on the crime. Most of the trash would flee to Houston and you’d have a halfway decent city

Port Arthur is shite because of drugs
There is actually money in Beaumont and Port Neches. All those LNG plants and refineries along the waterway there generate some serious money. You would think the plants would bolster the income of places like Port Arthur but the basic residents can't pass drug tests to get high wage technical jobs at the plants. So they can only do custodial, remedial, or low wage work. At that point they just stay on welfare rather than work.
This was straight out of some politically connected folks when i did a planning project there about 10 years ago.

The guys working at those plants don't live in the area. They don't care about that city.

BC it's controlled by unions and trial lawyers.

PNG area is decent, but in general most of the people that work in those plants drive a little bit because the surrounding area is dog shite.
Drugs has destroyed PA. but you are right on Beaumont, it could really be nice with the right leadership.

This. Its also a hell of a lot easier and cheaper to live in a good area than to help to invest and revitalize a crappy area. Old habits die hard.

Now do every city and town in lousiana.

It got worse after Katrina evacuees showed up.

The answer is crack. That area probably leads the nation in drug addicts per capita. Everyone is either a crackhead, meth tweaker, or heroin addict.

with my work, I've had to stay in some shitty towns, think your shitty boom or bust O&G towns
but Port Arthur is the worst by far
I had a 6 week project there years ago and I hated every second I was in that town

It is the butthole of Texas.

Lake Charles is smaller, but is now a direct competitor for industrial jobs and manufacturing.
Houston is a both a major competitor for industrial jobs AND a huge draw of educated young people that may have grown up in the Beaumont/Port Arthur area.
Both are within a 2 hour drive. And Beaumont is also pretty far away from the major universities in Texas or Louisiana.

It's the Louisiana effect

I think you're thinking of Bridge City. Port Arthur is just strip malls. I was there for business a couple weeks ago.

I'd rather live in the Lake Charles, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, or New Orleans area than in the Beaumont-Port Arthur area.
Probably Shreveport-Bossier too. But definitely not Alexandria.
Beaumont needs Lamar University to expand/improve and the whole area needs focus on improving Beaumont's downtown area. I have no idea how to attract companies and hotels down there, but it needs to happen somehow. It took Baton Rouge 20 years to reverse the emptying of their downtown and it's a much larger metro area. But Beaumont's smaller size might actually make it easier.
Beaumont is definitely an affordable place to live. It's probably less prone to storm surge than the southern part of Houston or even Port Arthur or Lake Charles. It's not hopeless. It's just ignored.
