re: Why is a prescription for heartworm pills necessary?

The food diet I need requires a prescription from most places, however amazon sells it without the need for prescription. so it’s always odd to me how some places require a prescription and others don’t. It’s the exact same brand and I’ve ordered it successfully before. It is more expensive buying it that way, so I just order from chewy now and they do require checking with my vet first.

Mine doesn’t require a visit to get more Trifelxis

my two dogs had heartworms when we got them at 8 months. did the medicine to get rid of it, then started on whatever heartworm preventative. Did it for a few years. Haven't given them heartworm medicine in over 5 years. They are doing just fine.

Veterinarian checking in here. I dont do private practice so i got no skin in this game.
two big reasons:
1. There are different drugs to control heartworm infection. As some have stated ivermectin is common. Certain breeds are very susceptible to ivermectin because they lack a blood brain barrier to it and it will kill them. So you're veterinarian is there to make sure you dont kill your dog.
2. If your dog is already infected with heartworms unbeknownst to you and you give it heartworm medication, it can kill the worms. Thats good right? no! The then dead worm can then dislodge from the heart and travels to the lungs where the body will cause a fatal reaction. Thats why the vet insists on doing a heartworm test before dispensing any drugs to you.

Pet food industry is a complete Scam.

Let me guess. You don’t get the flu shot either, right?

me? no
my kids, yes.
I have nothing against it. i'm just too lazy to go somewhere to get it, and i'm not going to die from the flu. If the pediatrician could have given it to me when i brought my kids, i would have gotten it.

The same reason you can no longer buy the rabies vaccine at pet stores any more. The vets lobbied to get that stopped so only a licensed vet or clinic can give the rabies shots.
I use to give all my animals all their shots. You can still buy the other vaccines for parvo, feline leukemia, etc. and give the shots yourself, but no longer the rabies.
The wife and I will go to the local fire station when they have the SPCA sponsoring their yearly vaccination weekend and it is much cheaper than going to a vet clinic.

Wrong.
It's because rabies is a deadly disease that can affect humans. Animal care and federal health services decided it would be best that it can only be given be veterinarians because they can document if an animal has been vaccinated or not.
This is good for you because if your dog/cat bites someone, we can do a quarantine and observation since its vaccinated, opposed to putting it down and collecting the brain for testing.
Again, i dont do private practice and sell rabies vaccines, so, no skin in game, just clearing up nonsense.

If you have a regular vet, just call and ask for the prescription. They shouldn’t charge for that. Then just get it filled via one of the online stores

This is the OT. It thrives on nonsense.

Therefore the vet can charge me like 300% the cost of buying it OTC?

you do realize the vet doesn't make up the rules on what requires a scrip and what doesn't, right? Its not like he just arbitrarily picks and chooses. Pretty sure that's all regulated by the CVM which is under FDA supervision.

Don't blame the service provider if you agree to the transaction.

Buying them from the vet is literally the only non-shady way to buy them only now they charge as much for a pill as it used to be for an entire box
