Why is a prescription for heartworm pills necessary?

I feel like this is obviously a way for veterinarians to leech more money from their customers.

some meth head probably figured out a way to get high off of it.

Pretty sure you can go to a store like tractor supply and buy all kinds of animal meds.

So the vet can charge you for a visit. It's all a racket.

Same reason you have to get a new prescription every year for contacts unless you order them from Canada. Lobbies.

because the dose needs to match the size and weight of your dog so it doesnt kill them. its pretty serious shite sort of like chemo but for dogs, you can just give them random amounts and hope they dont die

It is unpossible for anyone other than a doctor of veterinary medicine to weigh a dog.

Seems like these pills can have a broad range of weight classes? No?
Most animals don’t fluctuate enough weight to need a new prescription, otherwise they would be brought in for that issue?
Forgive me for my lack of knowledge on the issue. It’s why I ask.
Any ways, I always order from petshed. Not sure about heart worm medication, but this is where I get Revolution. They are based in Australia and require no prescription. It may take two weeks though, but the prices are good and it is name brand.

My sister has 50+ foxhounds and gives them sheep Ivermectin for heartworms. It is very cheap, and there are a couple of websites explaining how to dose it.
Caveat: Border Collies and Aussie Shepherds (and a couple of other herding dogs) can be Ivermectin sensitive.

No what’s crazy is needing a prescription to get some contacts. It’s harder to get contacts than pills that’ll get you high

Yep. I buy all flea and heartworm meds from my local feed supply store. I also get all the puppy vaccines from there and give the shots myself. The only time we go to the vet is for a yearly checkup and for an emergency.

Ivermectin is the way to go. No prescription needed, Lot cheaper

The 240.00 you spend on heart worm pills a year is much cheaper than the 500.00 plus you will be spending on getting rid of heart worms later on. I have rescued dogs that have had heart worms, it aint cheap.

Say my dog is a standard poodle. She is over 45 pounds easily. Revolution, which can be prescribed by the vet has different weight ranges. Oh and it prevents heart worms as well I believe.
The highest weight range for revolution is 45-90 pounds.. how is that not applicable every year for her if her weight isn’t drastically changing? It’s what the vet would have prescribed just a year prior or so. Why would weighing being necessary here?
It’s more of what others are saying.imo of course, but at smaller weights could be more important I suppose.
I actually have a vet now that files all your pets online and you can just order directly now through them... no needing to get prescriptions every time. If you just take your pet to the vet once and get them registered I’m sure you can do the same.
I have certain urinary food that requires prescription but all I ever have to do moving forward is have them ( usually chewy ) just call or fax my vet office..

I’ve used all sorts of methods.
Now that they have been to the vet, I no longer have to order from Australia. Much simpler just to get that one visit in.

Mine takes the 51-100lb dose. That's a massive range. It's not like they dose it down to the pound.
