OP and author are pissed that kids that work harder at something get better at it than those that don't.
Put this in a context other than sports: Let's say the OP's daughter studies really hard, gets help from parents and tutors if necessary, and gets straight A's and a high ACT score. Then works just as hard in college and gets a very nice high paying job. But, his friend's daughter didn't agree with doing extra work and therefore does not have a good job. Is the OP's daughter an a-hole for going the extra mile to be successful? Don't you feel for the friend's daughter since she is now left to appear like a failure to her peers?

Just like I teach the kids I'm blessed enough to interact with.....
Winning and losing are not scores, they are attitudes. Everyone messes up. Every falls behind. How do you react when you face adversity? Do you fold up and quit? Or do you fight through it?
Teams sports are awesome.

Why I Don't Want My Kids to Play Team Sports by anc
I want my kids to play team sports to understand the importance of winning, to develop an attitude of wanting to kick the other team's arse and dominate, and most importantly to learn how to function with other people in a setting and push towards one common goal.

Kids should play both team sports and individual sports. From an early age I was involved in competitive Judo (travelled to multiple states for tournaments for 17 years) and also in competitive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It taught me a lot about overcoming individual obstacles and if I lost it was all on me. But team sports teach you how to interact with others and work together to overcome a goal. Team sports teach you about sacrificing for the betterment of the team. When I have kids, they will do both team sports and individual sports. I want them to learn how to band together and overcome obstacles with others, but also how to overcome obstacles on their own.

agree 100%. So sick of no one taking responsibility for themselves and their own situation.

Mine is the best player on his 9U team.
This past Monday he caught two innings, pitched one no hit inning and hit a home run.
Maybe instead of crying and playing on your phone you should spend more time playing ball with your kid.

Author is pissed his family is not athletic.
Don't force your kids to play sports, especially if they suck. I don't imagine it is much fun being the worst player on the team.
Individual sports seem kinda boring. Nothing beats celebrating victory with your teammates.

I am all for not putting my kid in traveling sports, but there is no way (assuming they want to play) that I won't have them in some sort of organized sports. It builds so much more than body, it introduces you to competition, gets you having fun with other people your own age, and gives you something to be proud of, skin in the game.

It's not black & white by any means. There's potential direct/expected positives and indirect/unexpected positives as well as potential negatives. Kids can get burnt out, get shite on by a shitty coach or injured. Or they can learn some great life lessons.
The exposure, positive or negative, can affect them long term, or only for a short time period.
I think a good parent exposes them to sports and team sports, encourage, maybe a little nudging if their attitude is bad or aren't trying, but if they hate it let them quit (at the right time) and if they love it support them.

How about let kids play whatever they enjoy? Whether they enjoy individual or team sports should be nobody's business I don't give a shite what your child plays and you shouldn't care what mine does.

She doesnt have the drama of sitting the bench or having the coach play favorites
So when you're daughter joins the real world and her boss doesn't like her but likes others more, then what?
Hopefully that 28.95 pays the rent.

I say there are two sides to every coin...I love team sports and have been coaching my boys in baseball and football for years...but I can see the negatives...travel baseball (which I coach btw) can get WAY too serious...and it has actually done a detriment to traditional REC ball...the biggest point is though...whatever your kid enjoys is what you should do...and they shouldn't be pushed beyond their limits to satisfy parents...and when the writing is on the wall that they are not as good as everybody else...they should move on to something they are good at...we are all given different skill sets...
I do like this quote found here in the thread:

This is along the same lines as every kid should get a trophy, or everyone should get participation trophies... SMH
