Author makes some great points.
The travel baseball thread made me recall this article. Granted, I live in a youth sports focused suburb, where there are no less than three facilities that exist to cater to young athletes with private lessons and such, but I think its gone too far.
My daughter swims. Right now, her goal is to hit a sub-30 50 free and a sub-35 50 back. She's done it in practice, but it doesn't count unless it happens in a meet. Yesterday she swam a 28.95 50 free. If that would have happened in any meet she has ever swam in, she would have won it. Elite swimmers at her age are considered 28.09.
She has goals. She doesnt have the drama of sitting the bench or having the coach play favorites. Its really just her against the clock. I see so many more valuable lessons being learned by goal setting and pushing herself than I learned by playing third base on my 12 year old baseball team.

So working with others just isn't important? Relying on yourself and pushing you to your own limits is a great thing. But teamwork is pretty important as well.
ETA: I didn't read the article, only responding to what you wrote

In interviews I have had employers tell me they look for people who HAVE played team sports bc it helps in a work environment....all i need to know

I want mine to play as long as possible.

Why not do both?
I ran track and XC while still playing basketball as a kid.
They both have their lessons that kids can learn from

So your argument is that she's better off participating in an individual sport rather than learning the value of teamwork?

That author uses his own emotional anecdotal evidence to justify kids being individualistic pussies. Instead of promoting hard work, he blamed everyone else. He's what's wrong with kids today.
ETA: and if his brother is emotionally ruined because he wasn't good at soccer, then he's probably got serious mental problems.

Team Sports are about making sacrifices for the bigger goal of the team, something the entitled shite kids these days could learn a thing or two about.

I agree, but I would argue that those lessons aren't being taught by the majority of team sports today.

Is swimming not a team sport?
It is, she learns the value of teamwork by supporting her team members, swimming on relays, etc. But at the heart, its like track and field - just trying to make your time better.

So she's great at practice? Maybe if she played on a team the better players could help carry her and she'd finally get to know what it feels like to win at something other than practice.

You can set goals and push yourself in team sports

Team sports are great. Great memories. It's the parents who take it too serious that are the issue.

at the heart of any sport its about improving your own skills and goals
a track coach can still bump your kid from an event for a faster kid, or stick him in an event where he has no chance of winning just to fill a spot

In baseball you learn the value of teamwork by supporting your team members. You're also trying to make your batting average and fielding percentage better.
This whole thing just seems like a subtle brag thread to tell us how good your kid is a swimming practice.
