As a Louisiana resident it seems discouraging but that’s pretty much the way is everywhere. Big state universities seem to value out-of-state kids more.
I don’t know why.

My youngest ended up at Miss State because LSU waited forever to accept her.
This was my experience almost 30 years ago except I held out for LSU. I had full ride offer in hand from Miss State in October but didn’t hear anything from LSU until February.
I still have a soft spot in my heart for Miss State except when they play LSU.

The number of students receiving free college tuition through Louisiana’s TOPS program has dropped for the third consecutive year, most likely an effect of declining college enrollment.
The state-financed Taylor Opportunity Program for Students offers scholarships to Louisiana residents attending college in the state. After years of steadily increasing enrollment, the number of students receiving TOPS awards has continued to decline annually since the 2021-22 school year.
Nearly 46,000 students received TOPS scholarships in the last school year, totaling more than $270 million, according to data from the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance, known as LOSFA.
Compared with levels four years ago, that is a 14% decrease in participation and a $43 million drop in state spending on the program.

Then he did really well because they probably give out maybe 20-30 of these out of thousands of kids. It’s extremely competitive and you have to go through an interview process unless it’s a private scholarship.

Yeah I already gave my daughter a talk about how much more difficult her life is going to be since she is White. Times have changed.

Why did LSU admit unqualified? That doesn’t help their success and graduation numbers.
Because like every other university, they are infested with decision makers who want to look woke.

Because a lot of kids applying and going to LSU have insane stats. No offense but if you’re a top student they roll out the red carpet. You think 30 is good but to get the red carpet treatment you need straight A’s and a 34 or higher act because those are the instate students getting the money from LSU

It’s supply and demand. LSU is getting a ton of top students applying and they are getting the money. TOPS does cover a lot but until now once you hit 27 you would top out. And I know a lot of out of state students are applying and paying full tuition

My cousin graduated with Honors at a big suburban high school in a good district near Houston. He got a scholly offer to cover half the cost but he passed on it because it was still still to expensive. He ended up LSU on a full ride.
What a joke!! I know a kid with a 4.0 (Really higher due to APs, but WM refuses to give a kid any higher than 4.0) and 36 from WM that got 3K on top of TOPS. That’s it. Paying to go to LSU, while they give some out of state kid a full ride?
My kids took $50K a piece on top of TOPS to go to Tech and get paid. Bama, Ole Miss, ULL, hell ULM all offered full rides plus money. LSU was going to cost me 30K a year with room/board. It’s a travesty really. The speaker at the Junior Day we attended told the crowd it was worth going into debt. That was his pitch…seriously…

My oldest started at LSU about 15 years ago. National Merit, 35 ACT, top of his class. LSU’s initial offer was not a whole lot. I called and talked to the admissions counselor and one week later he got the top scholarship they offer. Paid for everything and more. Graduated with a nice chunk of change.
My daughter was probably a better candidate due to extracurricular activities. Academics were probably better also. She ended up going out of state to a top 15 university having to pay just room and board - cost was the same as LSU. LSU just wouldn’t offer much. Academically she got a great education.
It’s cheaper for kids to live off campus instead of on campus. At least when my third child went to LSU. I think living on campus is a valuable experience, but it just isn’t worth the money anymore.

Is it because kids who would normally use tops are now going out of state? I know my daughter is one of them.

Are that many kids going out of state? I suspect decling students in general (LA’s population is declining, people have less kids)

Don't look for things to change if the current interim president, Matt Lee, keeps the job permanently. Dude is a huge DEI proponent.
Matt "DEI" Lee has No Business Becoming LSU's Next President

Happened to my 2 as well..Ended up at RICE and TCU on full schollys and LSU offered littleral shite money in comparison...problem is the best and brightest leave for these schorlarships elsewhere and never return.....Not good long term for this state.

Been going for over 25 years. Seems like political suicide to end the program.
Not saying they will end it, but it could change at any point, while other schools will tell you the amount you are getting for sure over the course of the scholarship.

I think a huge problem is the amount of funding being provided to mediocre to above average students, not allowing excellent students to receive competitive offers

It’s been posted here several times recently that the number of applicants to LSU and the number of students admitted are as high as ever. Declining enrollment is not an issue.

DISGUSTING, given the fact our tax dollars pay for the school.

A kid that graduated with my son also had a 36 and was national merit and he is going to LSU despite them offering him very little more that TOPs. He could have had a full ride many places.
This kid has no common sense. WTF would you go to LSU when you make a 36 on the ACT ?
