It sucks for the obvious reason of students caring more about that than paying attention to work/notes. Parents make it almost necessary though because of the fit they through when they can't get in touch with little Jimmy and Sha'naenae. Ive taken cell phones for the day a couple times. Last time I got bitched out by a parent and decided it wasnt worth the annoyance. If they want to be on their phone and fail thats their choice.

Why does anyone in school need a cell phone?
There’s a phone in the office to call your parents, or your parents can call the school and they call you to the office over the PA.

Having them and using them are two different things. Our district has a strict policy on cell phone usage. If I see a student using his phone at school, it is confiscated for three days. The consequence becomes more severe each time. Now, individual teachers have to follow through, or it's not effective. It's a big issue because many parents raise immortal hell if their kid's phone is taken.

Because we are a arse backwards state and don’t really care about improving the state. They need to block the signals around the school so that kids can’t get on their phones. We want to improve our education? Well then we’ll have to do a little bit of old school stuff

What's even weirder is that some schools don't have landline phones in the classroom anymore. The last 3 schools my wife worked for didn't have a phone in the classroom, which meant my wife had to call the office/behavior/parents with her cell phone.

How can you confiscate their shite for three days? We couldn't use ours, but they'd just take it for the rest of the day, and if you kept getting caught you'd just starting getting detentions escalating with every infraction.
I'd be pissed about this policy if I was a parent. How do you know what my kid is doing after school for the next three days? They may need it.
