If a teacher confiscates my child's cellphone, that I pay for, its not going to end well!

Sure it is, but it's the same exact flawed logic.

The logic that negative consequences can prevent unwanted behavior? Yeah, that's flawed as hell.

I'm done, dude.

Has any parent challenged this policy, when you took their child's phone for 3 days?

I turn the phone in to the office, so I wouldn't know of any challenges, personally. I do know that we've had some irate parents come up to the school demanding their kids' phones. If that's what you're referring to as a challenge, then yes. I'm not aware of any legal challenges that have been made. Like I've said, I don't agree with the policy myself, and several other, better courses of action have been suggested in this thread, imo.

I'd be pissed about this policy if I was a parent. How do you know what my kid is doing after school for the next three days? They may need it.

This person right here is a great example why there are cell phones in school.

Leave your kid's phone at home. God almighty. It's ok if you can't reach them at any minute you damn well please during the school day.

My son lives with his mom two hours away. He has a phone for me to get in touch with him as his mom won't let him use hers to call me. Therefore he takes it with him wherever he goes. When he goes to school his phone stays in his backpack in his locker. If it got confiscated for 3 days I'd be raising some hell as that's my only way to talk to him.

I do agree they don't need to be used in school, but having them with them I don't see any problem with it. If the teacher has to tell them to put it away then confiscate it for the day and send it home with them at the end of the day.

It won't get confiscated if he's not using it, so there's no problem.

They ARE allowed to have them with them. They are only taken if the student is actively on the phone at school.

This is what I'm referring to. What is done in these instances?

Agreed. In school detention, or something in that vein is a better form of punishment, IMO. I'm not saying I would want my hypothetical child to be immune to punishment, just that taking away a phone that doesn't belong to the student is a not a valid punishment, IMO.

I apologize if this offends anyone. In Texas City ISD and the phone is confiscated there is a $15 fee to get it back. That policy started in 2014. Other ISDs have adopted various other cell phone policies.

No state law that bans cell phones in schools. School administrators are not law enforcement anyway. So on what grounds do they have to confiscate my personal property and refuse to return it for 3 days? This type of policy doesn't seem like it would stand up well to a legal challenge. Just wait til school takes away the phone of a lawyer's kid and refuses to give it back to the parents.

My God. People like you are what is wrong with the world.

No one is saying that they child shouldn't be punished for breaking the rules. Most of us are saying that the punishment is not acceptable, give the kid detention or something, but you're not confiscating my property for 3 days.

No I promise taking the child's phone away will teach them a lesson. You think if the kid doesn't follow the rules he cares if he gets detention???? You want to teach kids to follow the rules have real consequences. I am all for this and if my kid brought their phone to school and they got it taken away I would be all for the punishment. I teach my kids there are real consequences when you don't follow the rules. Too many parents let their kids off with a slap on the wrist or nothing at all. That is why we are in the shape we are now.
