Because their mothers tell them at a very young age that if a boy is being mean to them that means he really likes them. Sets them up for this mentality the rest of their lives.

I'd imagine some of this phenomenon is based on biology and some is based on our culture.

I have a good friend who admits she is attracted to guys like this and she questions it too. I think she finally concluded it was how her mom was raised and I really don't remember the other reasons.

Here is an insight don't listen. If you she puts you in the friend zone and you want more than break off contact and go after another one. Quit allowing her to emotionally con you by knowing you are interested even though she is not ,and then spilling her relationship problems knowing you will listen. If you talk to her next time and she brings it up tell her that you are not her psychiatrist or relationship counselor and just abruptly stop talking to her.

Until a woman is about 27 or 28 they typically "have a type" that they just have to be with. They believe love is "butterflies" and other BS. Not sure if its learning from failure or ultimately maturity that changes that. They likely categorize you as sleep with or shop with within 5 min of meeting you. If you fall into the later then doesn't really matter what you do. If they tell you things like you are not their type its better to move on give them 4 years you are either the type they dont want right now or just ugly. I was more introverted when I was young and it seemed like girls wanted exciting and out there. I was not going to approach a girl at a bar back then. For me it was more comfortable to become a friend before I was ok with opening up about my feelings.

I didn’t believe it and kept being the nice guy. I was respectful and polite and thoughtful (commonly referred to here as “beta).
All of my kindness didn’t get me shite.
In my mid 20s out of sheer frustration, I gave up on being nice and just started bing a dick. Not mean or spiteful, I just quit giving a shite. I had more dates and fricked more girls than when I was nice. I cannot understand why those girls preferred me as an a-hole to me as a “nice” person, but they did.
Why women prefer the a-hole to a nice guy is perplexing. Quit trying to figure it out and just stop caring about them. They’ll be on you like white on rice.
