re: Why do some people stop in traffic with 2-3 car lengths between them and the car in front?

The Mick and Th33fifty both get it: it gives you room to escape the dude with the gun who comes up and points it in your window and says "Gib me yo monaaaa." and he means it.
Only got caught like that one time in Houston. Once was enough. Space is a beautiful thing.

We were taught in driving school to leave at least a car's length in front of you in case someone behind isn't paying attention and slams into you. Minimizes the possibility of a 2 car collision becoming a 3 car collision. Seems pretty cut and dry to me?

Safety. If someone slams into the back of me I won't hit them. It's a safety cushion and it's the best practice

I do that if the car in front of me has been driving erratically, so I have enough room to maneuver if he goes nuts.

I do it so I can escape my lane if I need to. I leave about one car length, though, not more.

Because they're dumbasses who shouldn't have a license.

Because they are idiots ?????
Because they are screwing around on their phone and not paying attention?
Because they have no business having a drivers license ???
Because the little short naps they take are wonderful???

quote:Yep. I thought this was common knowledge. Because if a car rear ends you and you hit the car in front of you, you are at fault for hitting the car in front of you.
Have you ever been rear ended and hit the car in front of you?

Yeah, so if there is a spot with a green arrow, it only triggers if there's enough traffic to warrant it. Sometimes there will be just one car there when I get there, so I stop with about 2 car lengths in front of me so I am sitting on these sensors.
If more traffic comes behind me during the red, I'll just move up so more people can get it - so it doesn't obstruct the middle lane now being backed up by people trying to get into the left turn lane.

No, but that is a fair point I did not consider.
everybody says this but Ive never seen someone move up to not get hit by that car

But people will stop short of the car in front of them to not be jammed into it if they were to get hit from behind.

Google Smith Systems Drivers Safety. Best drivers safety training out there. Always leave a car length between you and the vehicle ahead of you.
As others have stated, if you are rear ended you will not be forced into the car ahead of you. Also if the car ahead of you were to stall out or die, you now have room to maneuver around them without having to back up first. Always avoid backing unless their is not other option.

One of the Smith system defensive driving principles. “Leave yourself an out”

But a car length to car length and a half should suffice for that, not three (like the OP is describing
Sounds like Green Rock Tiger has been rear-ended much harder than you...
Prayers for both
