re: Why do some people stop in traffic with 2-3 car lengths between them and the car in front?

Well if it's Baton Rouge, when the shooting starts you want to be able to GTFO of there real quick.
She was on her way to church (it was a weekday)

Yeah, so if there is a spot with a green arrow, it only triggers if there's enough traffic to warrant it. Sometimes there will be just one car there when I get there, so I stop with about 2 car lengths in front of me so I am sitting on these sensors.
Sometimes I am absolutely astonished by the useful info I learn on the OT. Had no idea this was a thing.

I hate it when someone is trying to turn right, but can't get in the turn lane because some dumbarse has stopped 3 lengths behind the car in front of him causing everyone to back up.
I'm convinced the biggest problem with traffic is selfishness and phones.
It mirrors society.

I leave room between car in front of me in bad neighborhoods in case I'm in a carjack sandwich.

To not hit the car in front of you if you’re rear ended.
What I don’t understand is everyone gluing to the arse end of each other, especially in merging delay scenarios. People are dumb as frick. Just leave a couple car lengths.

If you are stuck in traffic and leave plenty of length between you and the car in front you can accomplish the following:
1. Less wear on breaks because you may be able to idle more without hitting the break as often
2. Because of 1. you will decrease fuel consumption
3. Another reason might be if you have a manual transmission you may be able to creep and not have to push the clutch as much.

I do it when waiting on trains or construction workers. Generally not at traffic lights unless I’m in a sketchy area.
Reason is cause if I want to leave I can. I’m not boxed in. It’s a good thing to have that option.

Sure. But a car length to car length and a half should suffice for that, not three (like the OP is describing).

I always give myself enough room for evasive action. I pay attention behind me. Although I may be different if I was in stop and go traffic more than a few times a month.

This behavior in OP makes it more likely to cause an accident

I like to think I have a way out of the lane if road rage happens around me. Also in case I'm hit from behind

I disagree with practice. People will leave that much space between them and the car in front and they'll either back up into the thruway from the left turn lane or block the left turn lane from the thruway. Neither is helpful during high volume times.

That's why I leave space between my vehicle and the one in front. But once I see that traffic has stopped safely behind me, I pull up.

You've obviously never seen a millennial try to drive a stick.

I try to give the car in front of me a bit of room because this happened to me one day. Carb8n front of me started moving and suddenly hit the breaks because they spilled something in their lap. I had also started forward and stopped but tapped their read bumper. That did it for me. 2-3 car lengths is a bit much though.

This is definitely the way to go if you're somewhere where carjackings happen on the reg. You need to leave enough room to be able to floor it and get out of there.

For when the janky car in front breaks down I can go around it. I drive a janky car fwiw.

I have done this only if my car is in the shade

It's been a long time since I took driver's ed but the rule used to be stop far enough behind the car in front of you to see the ground underneath their bumper. Prevents you from getting rear ended and launched into them.
For us it was to be far enough back that you can see where their rear tires touch the road.

I can't stand people who sit at a green light forever.
Someone made a thread that they don't like when people honk at a red light for them to go. In my 16 years of driving and tens or hundreds of thousands of traffic lights encountered, I have not one single time seen someone honk at someone at a red light to go. It has a thousand for a thousand times been someone sitting at a green light on their phone not moving.
The people think that because the light was red the last time they looked up, and proceed to look down at phone for 30 seconds, light turns green but they don't notice, someone behind honks.. they think the light was red bc they dumbly didn't look up for 30 seconds, when it was green for a long time.
I don't get how you can not pay attention to a light. Especially in bad traffic cities.
