Why do so many good universities offer unmarketable degrees?

Given the high rates of unemployment for certain majors, why do universities keep supporting certain programs.
For example, Tulane has degree programs in African and Latin American studies.
And every major university has programs in Psychology and Sociology. Now granted, you could use these as a gateway to other professions but if were honest that isnt what they are used for.

Because of government backed student loans

Like Art History at LSU. A friend of mine majored in philosophy. He’s 39 and hasn’t found a job in his “field” since he graduated in 2002.

Because there's obviously demand for it.
Any other brain busters you have for us?

A university isn’t a trade school you simpleton
The people who run this country have liberal arts degrees, and we need people to teach those courses

And?
The question you should be asking is why do so many take those classes, not why they are offered.

IIRC Carly Fiorina was an art history major.

I don’t have a problem with those degree programs, but they should come with a clear disclaimer. You will never find a fricking job in the field of your degree, know this going in.

Psych can be used for a ton of jobs between HR and counseling positions. Why is it an issue if a degree is versatile? You’re still using things taught in Psych classes in HR.

Some people struggle with mathematics. I guess these folks figure getting a degree outside of Engineering or Science is better than not getting a degree at all. As long as people sign up for degree programs, schools will continue to offer them.

My wife does pretty well and she got a French Lit degree. As long as you put effort into, and grow from, your studies it is marketable.
I don’t specifically use anything I studied in physics.
It’s pushing past your struggles that makes you better, be it anthropology, or fine arts.

I understand that. It just seems as a society we would promote practical skills for our own economic interests.
And you just gave a Chicken or Egg argument. Would our leaders have those educations if the country wasnt so obsessed with University education.

I don't think the degrees not being marketable is as big of an issue as the folks who earn them not being marketable. If you get out of high school and major in psych while waiting tables or farting off through college you have no real experience to offer employers. Those degrees can be valuable if they are coupled with the right experience.

University = Liberal Arts
I do think if you are going to major in the arts or humanities I wouldn't do it at some shitty state school
