I can’t believe how some people just like to shite all over other people’s accents. It’s not like some can help it. You grow up saying something one way, you have no way of knowing any better.

It drives me insane but my own girlfriend pronounces the "L" in salmon

In Modesto it's produced Amond (rhymes with Hammond). Why? Because you have to knock the L out of the tree to get them to fall off.

Do you mean Almonaster, as in the boulevard? And check the pronunciations of New Orlins and Orleens Avenue.

The “almond” pronunciation is symptomatic to the NOLA softening (or even dropping) of certain consonants in words.
Lindy Boggs (who had the quintessential Uptown blue-blood accent) called the City “Neu Awl-unz”. No “r” phonic.
The phonic tattletale I always listen for is when I first am seated at a restaurant. The waiter or waitress approaches with menus or water and I thank them for doing so. Their response, if local is overwhelmingly “You welcome”. Again, no “r” phonic heard.
Doesn’t happen much away from South Louisiana.
ETA: Worrying about pronunciation in & around NOLA is a fool’s errand: Norman Robinson did the voiceover for streetcar stops and says “MY- lan” for a street named after Milan, IT-lee.
Just like everyone else says it for 150+ years around there.

It used to not be like that. My family from New Orleans doesn't speak like that.
But yeah almonds and salmon get the Al bundy treatment from the yats.
