Whether In politics, religion, etc. When people’s beliefs are exposed to scrutiny and found to be untrue, why do they get so angry and defensive?

Ask your father about how he felt when he found out you’re gay.

When people's core beliefs in life are challenged, it is psychologically like you are challenging their very existence. It is a primal reaction.

cognitive dissonance

Cognitive Dissonance Theory suggests that when a person's beliefs and desires conflict, they will experience discomfort as they become aware of the inconsistency. The theory of cognitive dissonance was introduced in 1957 by Leon Festinger.

Bc people are selfish.

For the most part they don’t care how others feel or what the think and is this website so eloquently demonstrates, being right is REALLY important to a lot of people.

This is kind of a serious question, whether intended that way or not.

FWIW, I've observed that partisan people typically form their belief about truth or non-truth of what is said based upon their assumptions about whether the speaker is on "their side."

You can test this theory on the Poli Board. Go there and say something totally reasonable and objectively true but preface it by saying something like, "I'm a liberal and ..." If my theory is correct, the mob won't believe anything you say, and will call you a liar, not based upon what you actually say, but based upon who they assume you are.

Why is that? Ok, I don't know. Ask Mr. Owl.

I think he should ask his father about what happened when he realized his own gayness

BINGO!! “Your deeply-held religious beliefs are superstitions and your political beliefs are based solely on the fact that you are racist and homophobic.... but why do you hate me for telling you that?!”

(Some Libtards will think that’s a serious question.)

What is “truth”? Because your truth might not be the truth when it comes to those topics.
