Why do military jets do training flights without missiles loaded?

Seems like walking around with a CC pistol that isnt loaded

have you seen the ignorant mind numbingly stupid kids today? by default some of them must be put in those jets and taught to fly without crashing and you want to give them live warheads

Missiles need maintenance too. The wear and tear on them from training flights doesn't justify it. They sometimes do carry practice missiles that have active seekers but no warhead or propellant

A pilot from March AFB was doing a training flight with missiles and had some sort of malfunction. His F16 crashed into a warehouse, but the ordinance didn't explode. They shut down a major freeway and a lot of businesses nearby for 2-3 days while EOD removed the missiles and then detonated it somewhere.
I would assume this would be why they don't normally train with missiles loaded.

Was about to say the same thing. Except, I understood he was scrambled and not on a training flight when the crash happened.

After watching an older coworker use excel, it baffles me that we have planes in the sky now.

You realize they don't only practice precision aiming right? Flying techniques, aircraft familiarization, close quarters combat maneuvering, trap and cat on carriers, taking off and landing on regular tarmac. Does no good to carry a missile if you can't take off and get behind the guy

The 777 doesn't use a powder chemical, so it's not really bags.
I will say that the 777 has multiple "fuel" tanks, though, that can be fed into the engines.

also I know on 9-22-87 USAF wishes USN tomcat was not carrying live sidewinders.... in the med....
