Have you seen how the average crew member on a large cruise ships spends their time and where? A bed usually two stacked, sometimes 4, a closet and a community shower. No windows and you work all day. its basically like prison here in the US except they pay a bit more. 3 hots and a cot

Only cruise I was ever on we had the same waiter every night. He was from Loas and his name was koracot (sp?) I was drunk first night and kept calling him cock or rot

these workers are coming from terrible homes and countries so alot of them are in a better place by working on the cruise ship.

It’s mostly because of tax issues as they are mostly foreign companies who have US operations. The pay is probably way more than you realize. I did an American cruise company for a summer. You did 6 weeks on and had two weeks off so I only did one rotation. The living was cramped, the food was very good. You worked about 12-14 hours per day and there was nothing you were allowed to do when not working.
You could expect to make $1400-$2500 per week. After a six week rotation you got off the boat with $10k and two weeks off. They flew you to and from the boat so you could travel quite a bit. A lot of twenty-somethings were living it up traveling all over between rotations.

Most of our jobs would go t people in other countries if they could get work visas. Probably easy to work on the ship flagged to random tiny port countries so hire who they want.

Almost all resort towns in the USA import lots of foreign labor seasonally. Almost everywhere we go in the US this is the case. For summer time it’s a must because American students go back to school to early and they need people through October. Where I live now the work force is almost 40% foreign.
It used to be Irish and English kids, than later German and Scandinavians. Then Polish and Czech. Later it was Romania, Russia, Bulgaria, and so on. Lately it’s been more from the “Stans”.

Both. They work 12+ hours a day, and spend up to 6-8 months away from home at a time, only to come home for a month. Their living conditions are crappy, and the pay is only ok.
You're not getting alot of Americans to sign up for that job when we can get jobs so much better than that. For some of them, that is the best they can do to protect their family.
Compared to other countries, Americans really are privileged. We don't realize how good we really have it. There's a reason we get so many immigrants here.
