Its really more of a layout of security and counters that is the issue.

Europe is smaller than the continental US. The major cities are closer together and can be easily accessed via rail or the Autobahn.

Sounds like you are comparing the major European internation hubs to the smaller international or regional hubs in the US. Believe me Europe has just as many crappy airports as we do. We tend to fly into the biggest and best airports in Europe. Have you flown into Salzburg in Austria? Way different than Vienna.

Well we have two options there. Either roll back the 9/11 security theater or bulldoze and start over because slapping on that security after the airports were already built is the issue.

Some of the newer airports in Asia and the major Middle Eastern hubs are just spectacular.
