Black Overrepresentation in Sports

quote:

But in general, blacks are overrepresented in professional sports. Many white Americans will, again, imagine that this has something to do with black genes, black athleticism, black African musculature. But this an illusion that only justifies white dominance in, say, the tech sector. Whites have the genes for that kind of thing: coding, programming, electrical engineering, and what have you. In this view, black dominance in brawn is naturally balanced by white dominance in brains. But anyone who has taught in a US high-school system knows that this balance is strictly imposed on black males. Intellectuality is not just discouraged but not even recognized. When you reinforce this attitude by underfunding education, the remaining opportunities for black success are not found in the classroom but in the gym.

quote:

But this fact, the practicality of one profession (programming) and the impracticality of the other (balling), is obscured by, indeed, the overrepresentation of blacks in the latter. This is a disastrous feedback loop. There are no black Jobs or Gates or Bezos, but there are a lot of Kapernicks and Jameses. As a consequence, a position in the NBA or NFL has the appearance of being more realistic than a position at Amazon. And the poorer you are, the more practical the impractical looks.

quote:

the reader returns to the early days of hiphop, they will find an amazing variety of characters, modes, and voices. There was the intellectual De La Soul, the quirky Kwamé the Boy Genius, the Islamic Poor Righteous Teachers, the black militancy of Public Enemy, the Afrocentric feminism of Queen Latifah, the hippy and trippy P.M. Dawn, the gangsterism of NWA, and so on and so on. All of these acts achieved some success. There was a market in the black community for this wealth of voices and modes. But things began to change in the mid-1990s with the inflation of rappers like Tupac and Biggie Smalls and Jay-Z. Labels began to focus on black gangster culture. Eventually, the mainstream was dominated by what sold lots of records in the white suburbs: black men threatening or killing other black men. This social process completely eliminated from the mainstream hiphop diversity. And now white commentators have the gall to argue that "hiphop has done more damage to African Americans than racism" (as sampled on Kendrick Lamar's "DNA"). But, of course, the reason why hiphop is doing so much damage is because the white owners of major labels extirpated all other voices but the most harmful ones. And we now have a situation where the raps of black men killing black men is a normal think to dance to.

I'm sorry, but there is science and history behind certain races being more athletically gifted through genetics.

Its not a pretty history, but its real.

I agree intelligence isn't racial, but to say that there aren't actually more genetically gifted elite athletes that are black is ridiculous.

ETA:

Same reason Kenyan's are better distance runners. There are examples like that all over the world. Polynesians, etc.

A bunch of Whites and Mexicans on LSU will surely beat Alabama...Don't get me wrong. They will be fundamentally sound and everyone will have a high motor but no victory.

Blacks are better athletes which makes sports more exciting

The point of sports ultimately is physical entertainment. We want the most capable people on the field and on the courts.

Blacks in America are more athletic because of breeding in slavery. You don’t see any lebron james, Todd Gurley or Cam Newton types anywhere else in the world really.

You can argue that African Americans are disadvantaged to not be seen as academics at young ages, but you can’t argue with size and speed and athleticism. If white athletes were 6’4” running 4.4 they’d be in the NFL as stars too

A GM only wants to best players. There is nothing wrong with acknowledging that African Americans have superior genetics as a race to run faster and jump higher on average than other races.

If they did not, then their representation in professional sports would generally mirror the census (~13% of the total population) which it clearly does not in some sports that require those physical abilities (namely, basketball).

Again, there is nothing wrong with recognizing differences among races. Why these discussions get politicized is irrational.

This. Things like hair color, musculature, athleticism, eye color, pretty much everything about you is genetic

But intelligence is 100% determined by socioeconomic factors

Not who, but what. And the answer is culture.

The intention is not to harm teachers. It is a response to those who bring up the fact that where Blacks are overrepresented, they get no criticism about.

That is a media lie (as always). Thete are those of us who acknowledge the stereotypes and try to fix it. Becoming athletes or musicians is "common" only because most blacks try to achieve that goal and burn out. This article gives the historical context.

And I would go into welding before getting a teacher certification.

Liberal dribble

Young black men tend to excel at an early age in athletics. They fall into the same traps many star athletes encounter, they become arrogant and entitled. They fail to focus on scholastics or preparing for the future. However, most never earn a dime from athletics. Not rocket science.

Nobody can force young people to listen to a genre of music. The studios produce a product that sells. Again, not rocket science.

Liberals love to blame others and not be personally accountable

I can agree with this to a point, I had a very good tech working for me who was black, he told me that other black kids shamed him for 'acting white'. He said he tried to teach his best friend IT, but peer pressure pushed him away. It's crazy, but I have no idea how to change it.

F*ck what people say, do what's in your own best interest and don't blame others for your failure, own it so you can fix it.

The issue isn't that there are too many black athletes in professional sports. The issue is that in some cultures education isn't pushed as much as athletics, or other less attainable career paths (music specifically).
