I think there are a lot of white people who are intimidated of blacks, when it comes to sports, so they don't play.

This was years ago, but for some reason this comment stuck with me. I remember there was a conversation about playing sports in HS and this one guy said "I would have played basketball, but I would have been the only white player on the team so I would have never got to play".

And I think there are a lot of people who believe that shite. Look, if you are good, no one gives a frick what color you are, but I honestly do believe, to some degree that mindset has held people back from participating in certain competitive sports.

Look at baseball. What are the majority of white kids playing? (at least in the south) Look at all the travel leagues filled with kids whose daddy thinks their kid is going to be the next Brice Harper.

Wait until tomorrow. I've got a longer topic about the government subsidization of the 1960s until today. ready for political talk.

Read the article. I cut out the baseball section. Baseball actually use to be the default poor kids sport until suburbs were created.

That article is preposterous. It makes no sense to single out the tech sector to oppose sports. What about teaching vs sports, or medicine vs sports, or civil service vs sports.

quote:

As a consequence, a position in the NBA or NFL has the appearance of being more realistic than a position at Amazon. And the poorer you are, the more practical the impractical looks.

...That's one of the most racist statements I've ever laid eyes on.

And this...
quote:

Eventually, the mainstream was dominated by what sold lots of records in the white suburbs: black men threatening or killing other black men. This social process completely eliminated from the mainstream hiphop diversity. And now white commentators have the gall to argue that "hiphop has done more damage to African Americans than racism" (as sampled on Kendrick Lamar's "DNA"). But, of course, the reason why hiphop is doing so much damage is because the white owners of major labels extirpated all other voices but the most harmful ones.

You know what else was selling in white neighborhoods? Ace of Base, Alanis Morissette, TLC, and N'sync. I don't remember their diss tracks on their platinum albums. And those record labels that promoted gangster rap were created by Sean Combs, Russell Simmons, and Suge Knight.

When did you become a race baiter? I liked you better when you were a hapless student and job seeker.

Overrepresented" is usually one word that lets me know it's going to be a shitty opinion piece. We're not all created eqypual, we all have differing abilities

Some people just need to accept that

I can accept that , but the article does have a little merit.

The chances of a black person being any other type of professional (doctor, lawyer, engineer, accountant, tradesman etc.) is statistically more viable than them being the next Lebron James. The only reason these kids perceive the opposite is because that's what they are most exposed to.

if anything, education is overfunded in this country

Gates and Bezos started their own companies. What's stopping a black computer genius from starting his own company?

but there are a lot of Kapernicks and Jameses. As a consequence, a position in the NBA or NFL has the appearance of being more realistic than a position at Amazon.

The NFL and NBA have about 500 players each, not counting Kapernick obviously since he is unemployed. Amazon has thousands of employees around the country.

Agree with your entire post.

As for the professional leagues, I believe it's less than 1% of possible contenders make it in.

When you reach middle class and upper middle class, the silliness of racial separation becomes far less important. The security of being a member of a group is far less necessary than being an individual.

There are plenty of very successful black people in this country who aren't even highlighted by the "community"

It's fine for sports. Just not always in academics, businesses or government. Diversity is too important

Same reason Kenyan's are better distance runners. There are examples like that all over the world. Polynesians, etc.

There was an interesting Ted talk about different body types dominating different sports and the Kenyans were brought up. Apparently due to the climate that they were brought up in they evolved to have thinner and longer legs that help them cool down easier than other people. It's pretty interesting because it's just one very small fraction of the Kenyan population that these runners come from. Genetically they are at a huge advantage as long distance runners but wouldn't have similar advantages in other sports.

75% of runners in Kenya are from one ethnic group, the Kalenjin, who live in the Rift Valley. The key seems to be coming from a pastoral culture, as the other endurance hotspots in East Africa follow the same pattern, which include the Oromo people of Ethiopia and the Sebei people of Uganda.

Why? Look at the successful civilizations in the world. Look at the stats.

It's the same logic you're applying to athleticism.

I'm sorry, but there is science and history behind certain races being more athletically gifted through genetics.

Its not a pretty history, but its real.

I agree intelligence isn't racial, but to say that there aren't actually more genetically gifted elite athletes that are black is ridiculous.

Better slow your roll, Jimmy the Greek was fired for saying much less than that.

So African Americans fought for equality in sports the middle of last century, now they’re saying they got too many?
