Why are public schools so bad, particularly in the South?

I’m going to guess it begins and ends with the childs’ home life, and how they are raised.
However, I think as a society we fail at providing a curriculum that produces actual real-life results. We need increased emphasis on things like English language instruction, basic finance and education on basic money management. It’s pitiful listening to athletes have difficulty with subject-verb agreement in every interview. Basic money management skills, including education on investments and time value of money will help people (thus the nation) develop wealth.
At the end of the day, the nation is only as strong as its people. We can’t forever depend on a small percentage of people to carry the load. How do we break the cycle of urban uneducated ghettos and rural trailer trash from producing equally useless people? How did Japan go from a desensitized, rogue, and war torn society to a scientific powerhouse in short order? We have so much untapped human capital in the U.S. that could potentially produce life-changing technological advancements that we can’t even dream about existing today.

A lot of reasons, including a few that would get me banned. Here's a reason no one realizes:
Before women were able to get into the general labor pool, they were very limited in job opportunities. As a result women took teaching jobs. Teaching got the best and most qualified women.

Not all are bad but you already know the answer. I can look at school tests performance and can guess the racial percentage. Busing has made some real good schools score go down.

As a former teacher in a BR public school, it’s home environment and attitude towards education, mixed in with a variety of other factors. Bussing was the worst thing that could have happen and only made good schools into bad schools. Also the lack of support for teachers from administration when dealing with disciplinary problems only emboldens troublemakers.

It is sad when the truth is not allowed in the conversation. How can you fix a problem if you can't talk about said problem? Let's just dance around the Truth. If a child doesn't fear God or doesn't have a father figure in their life the balance gets messed up. Mama tries. I was never afraid of my mother. There has to be someone showing these kids the right way. Absent fathers are a big problem.

I’m from Monroe and went to a private school. We got a black kid from a failing public school one year. I asked him what his day looked like at his previous school.
He said he and his friends smoked weed and play basketball in the gym until about lunch and then they’d ditch school and leave. He went to class maybe once a week and had straight A’s. He said he’d never done a project in his life. This kid was 16 years old.
The point you made about home life and environment is a good one. In an environment with failing schools and low educational enthusiasm, it’s easy to see the trend.

We had to fight tooth and nail against the public here in Kentucky a few years back to get them to raise the dropout age from 16 to 18. With a ton of pushback from rural areas that wanted to withdraw kids to work at 16. We have to fight, even in some good schools, parents who want to "homeschool" their kids every time they don't get their way.
There's no accountability in behavior anymore in schools. And people will point fingers at school administrations for it but it all comes from frivolous lawsuits by parents who want to blame everyone else for their shortcomings.

1. Most people in Louisiana couldn’t care less about education. They’re too worried about money and financing things they don’t need. Look how many people make six figures here with little more than a high school diploma. 2. There are also a lot of people here who spend their time as alcoholics and/or pill addicts. 3. There’s a multitude of people who half arse parent their 2-4 children when they shouldn’t have one.

It’s not just the south, it’s pretty much any area with a low economic population.
