re: Why are public schools so bad, particularly in the South?

I would expect that property taxes in Texas are higher than in Louisiana since Texas doesn't have a state income tax. The money has to come from somewhere.

There are too many parents that think of (public) schools as a baby sitting service. With that said, A former Newman student told me that it is a pretty loose structure where you can play video games for a few hours and then go to class. I would be pretty peeved if I were a parent paying over $30,000 for that type of education.

I am surprised that Illinois has the ranking it does considering Chicago Public Schools is ranked in the bottom 15% of all school districts in the state and it is by far the largest district in the state.

I'm pretty sure if you paid every Louisiana public school teacher 30% more a year, student scores wouldn't improve.

I remember a student transferred out of my high school to a public school and he was the valedictorian of his new school with a 3.4 and he had a low teen ACT score.

If the US should wouldnt require every student take the ACT/SAT and only those who actually planned on college then the scores would be better. Which is why it is comical to compare the US to many countries. They take the data they have on students and if a student is low performing they push them towards blue collar work, in the US we still tell that student they need to go to college to do something with their life

My daughter taught 3 years, 2nd grade, at a fairly decent Cy-Fair elementary school. She was a very devoted teacher. She's always been the kid that never fails and will work however hard to be successful. She quit teaching and went back to take prerequisites to apply to PT school (she will go next year). She could not tolerate the bureaucracy of the district and the lack of discipline.

Basically, if kids were bad and you sent them to the office, they just sent them back to class, or worse yet, they let them stay out of class and gave them computer time. There were ZERO CONSEQUENCES for bad behaviors. She felt she wasn't allowed to discipline and was just allowing kids to become problems. She had kids throw chairs, throw food, throw their tray in the cafeteria.

All the older teachers hated it and felt they had too many years in the system to just quit, but it was miserable for them. They were quite often glorified babysitters. The reason kids were sent back to class is so they could tear up the office referral slips and make their campus reporting look better. She would have done anything to help the kids. She actually loved teaching. She hated the oppression of the system. It took away teacher's professional opinions and decisions. She would have spent any amount of time helping the kids. Instead, the district required so much paperwork that all her extra time went there. All her fellow teachers told her to get out while she could. Many teachers left either are miserable because their hands are tied, or they are mediocre and don't care.

Suburb public schools in the surrounding counties are excellent, that's why. I live in DuPage county and pretty much any district has great schools

Bc the parents and community care more about the football teams wearing the schools name than they do about the schools themselves and what goes on inside them
