Why Are Painters Clothes Typically White?

Are they cheaper? I mean, anything they wear is going to be covered in paint. Why pay more for something you're going to ruin?

Trick question... roofers don't wear shirts.

Use to be the color of the painters union, most houses use to be white, its cooler, and it cost less.
