Doubtful that the building is theirs.

SFP is correct of course. There's nothing an attorney fears more than being disbarred. But you have to go about it the "right" way or you could get in trouble.

Also, leave an anonymous tip that they are peddling child porn. After they are raided and their computers taken, drop by in person and ask about the payment. They'll sing you a sad song about the raid. Then you laugh.

Can you elaborate on “the right way”. I posted that threatening a bar complaint (if money is not paid) could be extortion and was down voted.

If you use punctuation like in the OP, they probably realize they don't really need to pay you since you will likely need assistance filing any legal documents.

Holds true for any professional. Never threaten a monetary suit, go for their livelihoods.

I'm not an attorney, SFP is. I just know enough to realize when DIY isn't a good idea.

If you're looking for serious advice I really do suggest contacting an attorney. Judges won't give you a hard time if you acted on the advice of an attorney. They might if you didn't.

A good bit of the value of working with an attorney is that if you don't do things "the right way" you can blame him. Plus he might useful suggestions on top of that.

None of this is legal advice. You should talk to a lawyer who does collections.

Did you provide services directly to the lawyers involved? If you had a deal with the firm, it's probably a PLLC so the lawyers likely aren't personally on the hook for what the firm owes you. There's an exception (generally called piercing the corporate veil), but it's not easy to prove and it would be on you to do. It's possible that there are some distinctions involved with PLLCs that don't apply to corporations or LLCs, but I'm not aware of any off the top of my head.

I've never heard of a lawyer being disciplined at all because he works at a firm that didn't pay a debt. Reprimands, suspensions, or disbarments tend to happen due to something in the context of a lawyer's representation of a client - at least as far as I know. But like I said, none of this is legal advice.

Clients avoid paying lawyers too. My father will work on credit if he knows someone personally or they are a current client with a good payment record. Otherwise, cash up front.

Because they are lawyers.

It depends on how much they owe, but they know that someone is not likely to pay a lawyer to go through the process of suing a lawyer (law firm).

But it's a different story if it's the other way around.

Just to clarify, you're basing this on one lawyer/firm in one instance?

How much is it?

If it is under the limits of small claims court then sue them yourself Monday. Send a demand letter--10 days most states--send it certified (they will not sign for it I bet so send it FedEx--anything to be able to prove they got the letter) sue the 11th day.

If not have another firm send them a 10 day demand letter and tell them to sue them as soon as the demand letter expires. They will not want a suit against them in the court house. Make sure the firm you hire is aggressive and will not drag around.

While it is obviously not all lawyers/law firms, the law firm he is dealing with isn't the only one who doesn't pay for services right on time.
