i was born and raised inside the city limits of Houston, and as such, learned to drive on the mean streets. the population really changed a lot both in sheer numbers and demographics between Katrina and the Great Recession. prior to the 2005-2007 timeframe, Houston drivers were always very agressive, but there was sort some logic and an unspoken but generally agreed upon set of rules. but for the last twenty years, driving in Houston has been barely one step above a Mad Max-esque dystopian horrorscape.
Houston sucks so much now compared to what it used to be.

texas drivers love driving slow in the left lane...at least in Louisiana so I would think in Texas also

I've found Chicago drivers to be pretty nice, overall. There are far too many of them, and the streets and highways being so crowded leads to problems, but the drivers themselves try to collaborate, let you merge (if they can), and not do super-aggressive shite.
I left Texas quite a few years ago, but in my limited experience there, there is not one single Texas driver who will EVER admit even the possibility of there being another vehicle within 10 miles. Completely oblivious to anything but their own whims, at all times and all places.

This. I remember 80's through most of the 90's, Houston/Texas drivers would actually drive on the right shoulder to let you pass and get around. Left lane was actually for the faster drivers.
Now, I'm pretty sure slow people like to get in the far left lane as their own little FU to the world. And the Freeway is an every person for themselves with short fuses.

Texas used to have the wide shoulder so slower drivers could pass. It has been awhile since i drove country east texas so i don't know if that is still a thing
Left lane being the fast lane isn't really a thing inside the beltway, it is often the fasted due to less traffic but thats a function of traffic, not considerate drivers.
There is too many left lane merges like 610 north to 45 or I-10 east to 45 north

That might be true on I-10 between Houston and anywhere in Louisiana or other parts of Texas but the 610 Loop and even the Beltway are the extremes including 59 and 45. You drive in the left lane and don't keep up you are going to get your balls busted and it really doesn't matter if someone is in front of you or not. It's the frustration being taken out on the closet driver. I have to make this God awful drive on this wretched stretch of road by the Galleria twice a day and there is no rationale. OP is lucky it wasn't a standing still parking lot and he was moving. That's why people drive like retards. It's the frustration of being stuck in traffic and then getting an opportunity to go fast. .

the issue with "slow left lane texas drivers" is a function of I-10 being a shite show
it needed to be 3 lanes from Houston to the basin bridge 20 years ago. There is way too much 18 wheel traffic on it so the right lane is always slow. You can be going the speed limit in the left lane and passing cars.
i hate that drive so much
