Many Sikhs settle there when they come over from India. How do i know? Because I’m in the temp controlled trucking business and they all band together to set the market for hauling produce across the country at ridiculously high rates. They have been doing it for years and more and more of them are buying trucks and driving the market up.

They are very good business people and have taken advantage of the opportunity to drive trucks since many Americans won’t.

I played for the minor league team in Bakersfield and it was by far my worst stop, including a dump in Iowa. I can’t believe it is that big... it certainly doesn’t feel like it. I know there are some nicer areas but for the most part it was kind of a dump. Like a few others have said that entire valley is pretty rough for a boy from the south

California is a big, populous state.

I've worked in Bakersfield several times. Overall very friendly people and fairly conservative as well. Very spread out and does not feel like a big city at all. Much rather Bakersfield than that craphole to the south named LA.

A relative of mine lived there once and I visited there. We grabbed a few meals here and there and rode quads in the desert which was littered with deserted oil field equipment.

Been to both in the early 90's.

Bakersfield was a bigtime oil boom town, with old refineries most are closed and have been demolished. There are still many old wells pumping heavy crude oil, with steam injection. Pipelines take it to Los Angeles and Bay Area refineries.

That entire valley is a major crop and cattle area. Drive through it at night with the marine layer (Tule Lake Fog) holding all the smells at ground level is almost unbreathable.

Fresno was once known as the brothel center for Johns commuting from San Francisco.

Hwy 99 >>> I5

Not really. I5's surface is one of the best surfaces I've driven on. State 99 is ordinary, even that rough concreted sections that are bumpy.

Reminds me of an old joke:

One day an old man was sitting on his porch and sees a young boy walking by holding a spool of chicken wire. The old man calls out to the boy and asks, "What do you have there boy?" The boy says, "I got me some chicken wire, I'm going to catch me some chickens!" "I don't think it works that way, son." said the old man and the boy continued on. Sure enough a few hours later the boy walks by with a bunch of chickens attached to the chicken wire. The old man finds this quite baffling, but lets the boy continue on.

The next day the old man sees the boy walking by again carrying a roll of duct tape. "What do you have there boy?" asked the old man. "I got me some duct tape, I am going to go catch me some ducks." Replied the boy. "I don't think it works that way." said the old man. The boy continued on and sure enough he walks by a few hours later with a bunch of ducks attached to his roll of duct tape and once again the old man is baffled by this.

The next day the boy walks by again with a long rod and fuzzy thing at the end. "What do you have there boy?" asked the old man. "I got me a pussy willow." replied the boy. The old man looks at the boy and says, "Wait right there, let me go get my hat."

Both cities have great weather. Maybe it’s lacking in other things, but the weather is very pleasant in Bakersfield and Fresno

Spent a little time in Bakersfield myself. I can think of worst places to be stuck at.

You are 90min from the ocean or 45min from the mountains. I'm sure this is the case for all of California but the vegetable and fruit are soooo much fresher. Probably what I miss the most about the place. Also the cultural food seemed so much better whether it be sushi, mexican, Indian, vietnamese...

I'd take a place like Bakersfiled over a St. Petersburg, Fl or anywhere in south florida for that matter.

I think it's because they are large cities, but I could be wrong.

Kern County is among the safest places to be in the event of a nuclear attack. And Bakersfield is LOADED.

The central valley is huge. And while only a small part of the state's overall economy, California agriculture is a huge part of how the entire country gets fed. Seriously look up how many crops are dependent on CA agriculture. It's more than you think.

Fresno has over half a million people in the city, metro is pushing a million. I realize it’s mostly agriculture based, and it’s location doesn’t give it the pizzazz of the Bay Area. The same can be said for Bakersfield. It has about 380,000 residents...metro is close to 900k. It’s also a big agriculture area, with a large energy sector as well.

You explained it yourself, dude.

That drive up I-5 is awful. Farmland and the stench of manure for *hours.* When we take a trip north I'll take the extra time to go up CA-1 almost every time.

Really not much a difference between the I-5 and highway 99.

I didn’t find either road to be bad. As someone mentioned, 99 can get bumpy in the concrete segments. I do remember that from driving through a couple years ago.

I was in Tampa a couple of years ago. I am NOT a Florida fan, especially Orlando, but I didn’t find the Tampa area bad at all.
