played for the minor league team in Bakersfield and it was by far my worst stop

Was this with the Blaze? Pretty sure the shitty stadium is a reason the franchise shifted from the California League to the Carolina League.

Bakersfield grew around agriculture and the oilfields nearby.

Bakersfield is supposedly a little different than the rest of Cali. More common folk type.

Yup. The stadium sucked, and was the only one in the league facing west, so we couldn’t start games until the sun went down or the batters were looking directly at it. Almost 9 pm starts in front of 50 fans. 345 to dead center but played straight into the wind so fly balls never got out, unlike the rest of the league where anything in the air had a chance.
Despite most of that league being a dump the cost of living was way higher than any other league, meaning you were kinda screwed to play there instead of the Carolina league.
The kids in San Jose had to live like 8 guys to a crappy apt to have any shot

I've never been to Fresno but I used to work in Bakersfield sometimes. It is a shite hole. California statewide politics, taxes and none of the benefits - weather, scenery, economy, etc. Hard pass.

Do you have a point to all this?

Or anything to contribute to the thread?

You’re the one that started a thread asking about the size causation of 2 California cities by bringing up a hurricane that nobody’s heard of.

Lots of people. LA has tons of things to do and it’d be nice if the Central Valley had some cool things going on besides strip malls and chain restaurants

Bakersfield is only a little more than an hour and a half north of Los Angeles. A little less than that to the Santa Clarita & San Fernando valleys.

Born, raised and still live in the San Fernando valley. In my 38 years I’ve been to Bakersfield once and never Fresno.

As you said, both places are forgettable.

Sounds brutal. I know living conditions in the minors can be bad. Either tough it out on your own or live with a host family?

I’ve been to games in San Jose, Modesto, and Visalia. I guess it’s what I expect from A-ball stadiums. Modesto looked like a high school field. San Jose at least packed the stands.

Been to both while stationed in SoCal. Be thankful you don’t live in either because they are complete crapholes. Fresno always seems to make the least desirable places to live and Bakersfield can’t be too far behind.

I've only been to Bakersfield but I agree with that.

Most ôf Ca is pretty damn ugly. The vast stretches of dust don't do it for me, But it has a few spectacular places too.

Minors is sort of luck of the draw with where your affiliates are. Started in Spokane which was great. Immediately promoted to Clinton, Iowa which felt like a punishment as it is a hellhole that is polluted, smelly, and offers nothing for a group of young guys. Upside there is that it is cheap as any place can be... like 150 for rent cheap.

The problem with the Cali league is even in the “cheaper” areas it is really expensive for an A ball salary of 1250 a month at the time. San Jose was really fun to play in but most of that league is really hot, has no fans, and as a pitcher the ball flies so it is kinda brutal. We did go to sequoia and Yosemite on off days, so that was pretty great

Sounds about right. From what I’ve seen as a fan, I feel like the jump in city/stadium quality from A to Double A is one of the biggest. There are some obvious exceptions, sure.

It also gets a bit crazier when you look at the college program facilities. I imagine it’s tough on someone from the SEC to go to a place like Clinton, or those Cal League cities. You go to Auburn?

Yes, and at auburn before the big boom in SEC facilities, so when I went we had the highest rated stadium in America. (I thought arky was nicer)
It is a big step down for most to go from the SEC, but like I said luck of the draw. Most rookie ball situations are a mess and the bus rides can be brutal. Most stuff out west isn’t great. Some places, like Dayton or Greenville,sc are great and would be awesome to play in. Double A by and large are nicer now for sure, and below that is just hit and miss.

The year after I was cut our A ball teams moved from Clinton, IA and Bakersfield to Hickory, nc and myrtle beach. Would’ve been near my wife’s family and within driving distance for my parents a good bit

A lot of Arkies, Okies, Texans, Kansans and Missourians settled in the area during the dust bowl years.
