Why are Fresno and Bakersfield so big??

You’ll have to excuse the randomness of this thread. I’ve been without power almost all day because of Hurricane Hanna. Hard to sleep in this hot house. I went down a wiki rabbit hole.
Fresno has over half a million people in the city, metro is pushing a million. I realize it’s mostly agriculture based, and it’s location doesn’t give it the pizzazz of the Bay Area. The same can be said for Bakersfield. It has about 380,000 residents...metro is close to 900k. It’s also a big agriculture area, with a large energy sector as well.
I’m sure these cities are much more affordable than most places in CA. Their downtown skylines look very ‘small town’.
I’ve been to Bakersfield, not Fresno. I’m not knocking either place, just curious as to why these places are so large. It’s easy to see why the Bay Area, LA, San Diego, and Sacramento are big.

The only thing I know about Bakersfield is that massacre last year by that son of a bitch Ben Richards.
Hell of a game show contestant.

Don’t take that energy sector job in Bakersfield

Seems like I would have heard of it.

Never been to Fresno but I know a few people from Bakersfield and I have been there. Bakersfield grew around agriculture and the oilfields nearby.

Do you have a point to all this?
Or anything to contribute to the thread?

California is geographically very big and that part of the state, as you observed, is an agricultural juggernaut. And it's a lot of huge, corporate farms and you need accountants, lawyers, engineers, etc to support such huge operations. That area is not close to LA or the Bay area so all that support has to have people in those farm cities.

It is where the Bakersfield sound or California country got started.

Fresno is the largest metro not to be served by the US Interstate system.

Agriculture and cost of living is much more affordable.

Bakersfield is only a little more than an hour and a half north of Los Angeles. A little less than that to the Santa Clarita & San Fernando valleys.
There was a big population boom in the early 2000s with people leaving LA in droves due to affordable housing & a cheaper cost of living. I lived there for 4 years and most of the people I was friends with & their families (including mine) weren't from Bakersfield. It boiled down to people being able to stretch their $$ a little bit farther and provide a better lifestyle than what they'd be able to in LA, SD, & The Bay area.
As others have said it's got a huge Oil & Ag sector that employs a big chunk of people. It's pretty spread out and has almost no real downtown area which is a shame. It's got a few mid sized buildings, but the downtown area in general leaves a lot to be desired for a city it's size. The most memorable land mark is the welcome to Bakersfield sign directly off the freeway as you come in.
Pretty forgettable city imo

I live in Bakersfield..definitely doesn’t feel like it’s as big as the population indicates. Really a boring place for the amount of people who live here. Too far from LA to be in their sphere of influence too

No need to get an attitude

Generally speaking, both are shitholes. The entire Central Valley is though. There are some gorgeous neighborhoods with genuinely nice people in both towns that would surprise a lot of the people. But in general, each town as a whole is a reflection of what you see from the freeway - butt ugly and stale. The biggest downside to both places is the lack of education and brain drain, meaning anyone worth a shite who is college educated usually hauls arse for better opportunities and never returns.

Do people there still have southern accents or is it no longer a thing?

I’ve been to Bakersfield. It’s not something I like to brag about
