Houston suburbs are great if you have kids.

I do.

In Bridgeland out in Cypress. I frankly dont give two shite about the bar scene and stuff like that. Have three kids and there's plenty to do out here for the kids. The neighborhood has a shite ton of amenities. Schools are all incredible.

My office is also off 99 so I don't have to deal with going downtown or the galleria.

I'm moving to Houston in a month and WFH for the foreseeable future so work location and/or commute isn't really anything I can factor in right now to where I want to be. Kinda blindy looking with the advice of a few trusted people. All I can really narrow it down to now is the NW quad of the city, probably have to be a bit for out since budget is a big factor.

Googling 'apartments in Houston' didn't really narrow down my search very much. Relying heavy on reviews and figure I can live through anything for the first year, as long as it's not gunshot crack infested slum. Whatever gets me there is the first step and then I can settle in better after I get a feel for the city. Trying to find a spot where my budget limit is the bottom of the apartment complex range so I'll be the lowest $$ class in the place instead of having the nicest ghetto apartment. Seems to be a good rule to guide me.

I'm just absolutely done with the Louisiana economy and other factors. Being able to work from home for at least the next 3 months tells me I need to take the leap now.

In August, I'll officially be a Texan. Can't wait!

Just moved to north Richmond from Cinco ranch
Property taxes are cheaper here
Schools in KISD are superb, my kids are done with HS

I WFH, wife is 50% WFH so her commute is not too bad, 45 mins at the worst, 25 mins at the best on the Westpark

Houston is great once you figure out WHEN to go to things, big freeways are a blessing
Just have to time things right
Houston has everything you could want, we love it here

I was born & grew up in NOLA. After graduation, when I got a really good job, I was transferred to Houston. To say I was homesick would be an understatement! I would leave Houston after work on Friday at least every 3 weeks and travel back to NOLA. Besides my friends and my parents were still living there as well. However, with time, I hooked up with 3-5 roommates, all from either Ohio or Pennsylvania. We got along well, all had a love for our college and pro teams, so we talked smack all the time. After we all pretty much went our own way over time, I started dating a Houston girl and within 2 years, we were married.
Over time, the visits to NOLA were less and less, then even my sister moved to Houston, after which even my parents decided to retire over here too.
But you have to understand, I never planned to stay in Houston, in fact, I remember telling my friends in New Orleans I would probably be back in 6 months, but that never happened. That was all many, many, years ago. I reduced visits to NOLA maybe once or twice a year and my opinion of the city changed. I started to enjoy life in Houston, in particular, NW Houston. New Orleans suddenly looked sad, almost like a dying city.
The point of it all, is that no one loved NOLA more than me, yet I made the change to Houston, so anyone can! Yes, the Woodlands is great, but even Klein ISD has good schools as well. However, if you have kids, stay away from Spring ISD- over the years, they have become 'urbanized' and the school district is barely above Orleans Parish schools!

I used to. The big con: if you dont work in the same general area, your commute will eat away at your sanity. For two years i lived in the nasa area SE of Houston and worked downtown. 46 miles round trip, mostly all of it on 45, and my commute time was anywhere from 1.5 hrs to 3 hrs (round trip). It is a sloooooow CRAWL... every. Single. Day. Twice a day.

Thanks man. Good to hear. I'm middle aged, but no kids to worry about schools. I just have to get there. I've now made the decision and picked the day.

If you happen to pass the Beckley Apartments, let me know where it stand on the Crack being 1 vs Country Club being 10 scale.

Kingwood checking in. I work on the NE side of town so my commute is pretty painless. The front of Kingwood is ok for commuting downtown but sucks arse if you live in the back. Schools are awesome but the football is pretty bland if you followed high school football back in LA. Speaking of LA, Kingwood probably has more LSU fans than any other suburb out there. Most of my block are people from LA and obviously I am the black sheep.

In-laws have lived in "the back" of Kingwood for over 25 years (transferred from NOLA). It takes longer for me to get to hwy 59 from their house than it does for me to get downtown from our suburban house in NO. My brother lives just outside the loop in SW Houston and it's almost an hour door to door, without traffic. Both are inside the city limits.

But it is an easy place to live and as noted tons of LA folks - LA people would recognize many surnames throughout the KHS yearbook. It was perfect for my mother-in-law, who had spent most of her life in Laffy and NOLA. At this point we have more close family there than in LA.

The Woodlands is my personal favorite. Has more character than your typical cookie cutter suburb and enough of its own industry to support nice restaurants and entertainment.

Checking in from the Katy area. Moved here in 2004 with the plans of staying maybe 5 years and moving back to BR. Never happened and wont. That said, I have 2 left in High School and just the wife and I are eyeballing a move to the Heights for a few years before I retire. Loved living and working around Houston but as some have said you have to plan your location with your commute. As far as Katy goes, its a different place than where we moved 16 years ago.... mostly better (restaurants and things to do) some worse (the traffic). I just don't want to pay the property taxes once my kids are done with school.

It’s definitely worth it considering how close it is to South Louisiana. You can go see friends and family multiple times a month. Can still make most events in Louisiana without having to deal with the crap government and other negatives. Houston’s proximity to Louisiana is so much bigger than many realize. A good chunk of the city is made up of people who used to live in LA or have ties to LA.
