It was bad.

Thankfully, we had TigerDave and his crew on the loose around NOLA cleaning up the mess.

Thanks, TigerDave.

I remember all the news reports about the Superdome and the initial prognostications from the media that due to all the damage inside it would have to be torn down.

Were you there?

I was, It was bad.... Did the city dodge a bullet if it wasn't for the levee breach; probably, but to say the city didn't take a big hit is just stupid....

I think the way to describe it would be to say that far SE Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast took the worst of Katrina’s eyewall, thus they got the very worst of the wind and storm surge. New Orleans still had bad wind given how large Katrina’s wind field was, and then the levee failures were the City’s ultimate doom.

I wonder what internet boards he is selling his BS on today? He is probably a fleet admiral by now.

Wrong words. I’m thinking in terms of the flooding and damage MS received. Everyone was focused on NOLA. Of course there was hurricane damage, but flooding was not “Katrina” proper. MS got it worse.

This. We were out on Napoleon in the sunlight after Katrina passed. Debris was everywhere and the area for certain took one on the nose. However, no flooding.

Then reports stated coming in saying levees had begun to fail and you could literally see the water start coming down Claiborne towards the hospital. A lot of “oh shits” started to creep in for everyone. Within hours, dry streets were submerged up to and over the stop signs.

Governor Jeff Landry is also a ULL alum. I wonder if he will try to help his Alma mater or just be a good boy and stay out of it.

MS got the insane storm surge and looked like bombs went off, almost everything on the coast was leveled. Still today many huge lots are bare but rebuilding has steadily been going on.

This is inaccurate - our beloved Saints stopped using Astroturf late in the 2002 season.

Yes. I felt so bad for how MS was referred to as the land mass. And it got to work rebuilding, while Nola folks are still waiting for handouts and laying blame. No reason for those properties on flooded areas to not have been confiscated if owners did not rehab and use for housing and rebuild better. But Nola thrives on blight.

I just had a bad thought. For as bad as our officials looked(Nagin as well as Aaron Broussard), just think if we would have had Teedy speaking to national media everyday after Katrina. LOL

Yes. Unlike some, I take responsibility for my actions.

It dropped to a Cat 4. They retroactively classified it as a 3 around Christmas of 05.

As to why, well...

Every single tropical system, hurricane or otherwise, goes through a post-season review and gets a final report. Katrina wasn't special in that regard, storms before it and after it have been adjusted up and down, but that doesn't help with conspiracies, though.

It was bad, it wasn’t as bad at land to the East got. As horrendous as Katrina was for Nola, from a storm standpoint the Mississippi gulf coast got worse

I have a good friend who lived in New Orleans when Betsy came to visit. He was in high school at the time and he told me about the flooding that occurred . His parent's house had 5 feet of water in it. The National Guard came in to help and he said that there was no real chaos like what happened after Katrina.

I met kathleen blanco when she was Lt. Gov. . From the conversation that I had with her I could tell that she was a dummy. She would talk down to people and she acted like she was more intelligent than everyone.

Hopefully the governor's office has learned some important lessons from Katrina. The time to act is hopefully 2 weeks before the storm arrives. If Cantore says its coming act like it is. It should be mandatory that NO should be evacuated. It is below sea level and don't depend on those pumps to keep it dry. Look at a bad thunderstorm. Load those Amtrak trains up and send them back and forth to Memphis and Jackson until everyone is out.

Don't want to leave ? That's on you. If I were the governor I would place a curfew, if you come out your house you get shot, then arrested.

Here’s the deal about why Katrina was so bad. The levees were breached in New Orleans and the flooding is what made her such a bitch of a storm. It still would have been pretty bad because the storm was strong, but not as remembered if it did not flood.
Without the man made failures Katrina wouldn’t have been all that bad for New Orleans.
