The fact remains that MawMaw declined Federal assistance for DAYS while she wrung her hands over the notion that a Republican President might look good helping out. She took the blood of many on her hands to her grave. A seemingly nice lady that was in WAY over her head, and got a lot of bad advice from those around her.

It dropped to a Cat 4. They retroactively classified it as a 3 around Christmas of 05.
As to why, well...

Never forget the fleet of school buses unused and swamped in a parking lot. Each one of them could have been loaded up with citizens and taken to a safer spot than parked under water. But such was the leadership in NOLA then.
Dems only care about blacks when busing them to the polls.
This remains the dumbest red herring ever.
The people who didn’t evacuate weren’t getting on a freaking yellow school bus to go God-knows-where, even if the mayor could have somehow commandeered people to drive them (he couldn’t).

A US General having to tell the National Guard to stop pointing weapons at citizens bad

In Baton Rouge, I remember scores of people being dumped out at Siegen & I-10 and the vehicles continuously turning around and going back for more. It looked like a smaller version of Woodstock.

Too many people stayed that had the means and ability to leave. That remains true and does not in anyway take away from the massive failure of leadership at the City, State and Federal level in the days after the disaster proving assistance to those who had been rescued from the dangerous waters.

If you lived in that area, you were screwed.
I recorded a lot of it on Fox news. Copied from VHS to dvd-r.
Sad to watch.
Aside from people dying the worst part was the hood rats moved north.

I AM writing from the distance, but how does that change anything? I didn’t choose to live in the area below sea level which is potentially visited by tropical storms and hurricanes.
Sorry if the truth hurts. FEMA lied, Nagin lied, the Gov lied… not MY fault.
* And it makes it even worse because they lied for purely political reasons.

As bad a New Orleans can be, clearly a lot of progress has been made by the City (with help from the state and federal governments) since Katrina when it comes to dealing with hurricanes. New Orleans took more of a direct hit from Hurricane Ida in 2021 than it did from Katrina, yet there wasn’t an apocalyptic aftermath in New Orleans following Ida.

Got lots of room in those stolen Escalades for stolen guns and stolen clothes...

The help given was appreciated.
Not sure if those officers assisted in the gun confiscations, but I don't think so.
In terms of an immediate crisis, I think it is incumbent upon the individual to take care of themselves.
"Within days" is a long time in a fluid, violent situation.

Does anyone have insight into the massive FEMA camp/morgue that was constructed in Carville before the storm?
Huge morgue was set up in St Gabriel in an old school off of Bayou Paul Rd. Feds ran it through DMORT - Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Teams. Air conditioned 18 wheelers held bodies while the teams identified them.

But I'm sure that was set up after the hurricane hit.
I am quite certain nobody had a plan in place to set up a FEMA camp before landfall.

The levee didn’t breach? Maybe that’s why? Nola didn’t take a big hit from Katrina, the land mass got Katrina. Nola went down bc of the breach.

That’s what I’m saying. There weren’t the same type of critical, catastrophic failures with Ida as there were with Katrina. The levees being the prime example.

Wut?????
Were you there? I was, It was bad....
Did the city dodge a bullet if it wasn't for the levee breach; probably, but to say the city didn't take a big hit is just stupid....
Look at the Hyatt...
Even the Galleria in Metairie took a hit...
