They didn’t want to leave and won’t next time either.

Moving forward, I would not want to be in a large city during a large scale natural disaster such as a hurricane. Primarily, this is due to the immediate aftermath and opportunists who will strike while first responders are stretched thin and solely focused on rescue efforts. I saw some wild things go down.

All that choose to not leave should be told they are on their own and nobody coming to help. Isn’t that what Grand Isle and other places did in Ida?

I was an officer in the Army National Guard and was at the superdome a day or so prior to the storm up until they finally evacuated everyone. It was very bad.

Considering what that meant as far as the levees that were rated for Category 3 protection, yeah, it was a big deal. It was just downgraded with no discussion, then the whole "levees weren't as strong as they were supposed to be" talking point came out of it - believe it was a factor in lawsuits.
A conspiracy would be that "they" blew up the levees.
IMO, they got it right in the final report. Katrina was rapidly weakening on its final approach due to the EWRC and entrainment of dry air (specifically on the western side). The 0600 advisory put winds at 125kt. The 1200 advisory had it at 110kt, which was after initial landfall. Even that was likely a little high, and that max wind would have been East of NOLA (per the report). It really isn't a controversial decision to go with a high end Cat. 3 given all of the data.
In respect to the wind, the levees, the surge, and what ultimately happened in NOLA whether it was a Cat. 4 or 3 doesn't matter one bit. It was the size of the hurricane, and previous strength, that doomed NOLA. It could have weakened even more, to a Cat. 2, just prior to landfall and the city would have faced the same fate. That amount of water doesn't stop on a dime.

One of the weirdest things to me was after we left the city that Wednesday after the storm we came back in on Airline from Gonzales the Saturday after, seeing all the military planes sitting at MSY.
It looked like a military base...
It was also strange seeing people walking along Airline like they had no place to go. It was like some post-apocalyptic movie or something.
While we were at the house, in Metairie on old Severn, that Saturday they were doing helicopter evacuations from the city to the airport. When they were returning to the city, their flight pattern was about 200ft directly above my house. When a Blackhawk would fly over you could tell what it was...

Yes. Those poor people had access to zero water and none was coming.

CNN - 12-21-2005 - Katrina a category 3 not a 4 as originally thought
Should it matter? No, but it did.

I don't care what it was noted at landfall, it was pushing the surge of a large Cat4 as it got close. Pretty sure it's the biggest surge to ever hit the gulf coast.

I don't think you understand that it didn't matter.

Perhaps one of the most overblown incidents in American history.

Go on. Enlighten us with a little more than this.

In terms of damage, no.
In terms of the blame game, which the state was playing before it even hit, it certainly did.

The sarcasm. It flew right over your head.
That said, way too many bad troll posts lately.

That and the outright gun theft from law-abiding citizens should give everyone pause.
There were some law enforcement personnel who were involved in wholesale gun confiscation - NRA filed a suit to recover illegally seized guns and expose this unconstitutional action. NRA won.
There were also law enforcement personnel who when approached over this confiscation scheme, refused to participate and plainly stated that they would file charges against any other law enforcers who violated 2nd Amendments rights of lawful gun owners under color of law. That is a federal felony.
As in most situations, there were good and bad displays of character in a moment of pressure.

I get where you're coming from now. I still maintain that the final, adjusted rating of Cat. 3 at landfall was the correct call. What the state did after that has nothing to do with NOAA/NHC. Their reasoning was valid.

Two completely different sets of circumstances that aren’t remotely comparable.
Back then black lives didn’t matter and George Bush flooded those poor people.

Bush should have known how bad storms could get from his days as Gov and a bridge who was Gov of Florida. Love what he did for our country but his response to Katrina is as big of a black mark on his legacy as the "Mission Accomplished" photo op.
I don’t like bush but maybe blame the people who fricking looted, murdered, scammed fema, were contractors scamming people in the rebuild, and blame the fraud mayor.
Oh and all these years later and money given to that city and they still flood and can’t keep pumps on.
This could easily happen again to chocolate city.
