I just laughed at that.

Bud? I’d do nothing, take care of yourself or don’t. But definitely no dome sheltering. How embarrassing. And no other city wants refugees. BR and Houston have been ruined bc of Katrina.

two weeks is an awful lot of time before a hurricane makes landfall and the forecasted path changed quite a bit
one week before Katrina made landfall is was over the Bahamas in the Atlantic heading north up the Atlantic coast, two weeks before it made landfall it was even further out if even a system

Of course it did, not denying that, it was on the worse side the storm. Just calling out someone for saying New Orleans didn’t take a big hit.

Katrina hit landfall at Buras Monday morning, the Friday before, they were saying it was heading towards the bend of Florida. It wasn’t till Saturday they knew where it was headed…
It came up very quickly, there was no two weeks..

New Orleans took a big hit because of the levees…. If they don’t fail, it’s not that bad.

I don’t know why this is downvoted so much.
This absolutely happened.

I remember 350 or so orleans parish school buses that could have been used to get people out..

Think about this for a minute. Consider that the city had about two days of full warning. There was no comprehensive plan in place to move thousands of people out of the city(although there should have been at least something in place). Nobody had any imagination that the city would get 80% covered in water.
Now who that normally would drive those buses was going to sign up to do do that for about $12 an hour and leave their families? Where was the plan to get these people to that was set up and pre-pared that weekend? Beds, water, food, etc. None of that was even a thought at that time.
Thankfully we all learned from it and hopefully better things can be done for the next big one. Although I have my doubts about the most helpless and very poor after seeing that the big nursing home operator from somewhere around here sent a bunch of old people to stay at basically a glorified warehouse with little AC during the Ida evacations.

It was really bad in and around the dome… I remember the pic of a woman in a wheelchair that just got covered up and left there…

I wouldn't wish Katrina on any Governor, let alone Blanco. She did her best. Honestly, she's the last democrat who had any power in this state that I have a smidge of respect for.

Oh yeah I've seen that recently. Looks good now. That sure was a far way in.

Every single tropical system, hurricane or otherwise, goes through a post-season review and gets a final report. Katrina wasn't special in that regard, storms before it and after it have been adjusted up and down, but that doesn't help with conspiracies, though.
Considering what that meant as far as the levees that were rated for Category 3 protection, yeah, it was a big deal. It was just downgraded with no discussion, then the whole "levees weren't as strong as they were supposed to be" talking point came out of it - believe it was a factor in lawsuits.
A conspiracy would be that "they" blew up the levees.

Never forget the fleet of school buses unused and swamped in a parking lot. Each one of them could have been loaded up with citizens and taken to a safer spot than parked under water.

Where would you have suggested they bring them?
People made fun of looting shoes from like Foot Locker, etc, but if you talk to someone who did take shoes, Their response was, "After walking through nasty water for days and then getting to an overpass, those shoes were like heaven.

Before the storm or after the storm? Because before the storm the people didn’t want to evacuate. Secondly, evacuate to where? People went to the Astro dome because there was essentially nowhere else to go. Nobody is agreeing to go live like that before a storm.
Now, after seeing how the residents of NOLA acted once in houston, I doubt any city would accept them.

It dropped to a Cat 4. They retroactively classified it as a 3 around Christmas of 05.
The National Hurricane Center actually had Katrina classified as a Category 3 hurricane when it was making its second/primary landfall along the Mississippi Gulf Coast near the MS/LA border. This is the advisory NHC issued at that time:
It’s hard to say exactly what the strength was at any given moment as Katrina was coming ashore. It was gradually weakening, but no one can say exactly what strength it was during any given moment. It was a high end Cat 3 to low end Cat 4 in that time frame. Importantly, NHC didn’t under-forecast the intensity (i.e., predict a Cat 1 or 2 and then a Cat 3 or 4 happened), so decisions weren’t made based on a forecast that was too conservative when it comes to strength.
