I still drive a 15 year old Ford Pickup. I'll buy a new one when it brakes.

My current daily driver is 13 years old. A pretty popular SUV, but has some body mods. I usually get asked if I want to sell it at least once a week, more often during football season.

My last one was 26 years old and was one of only four in baton rouge (that I know of), I found notes on it a few times a week when I would park on campus. It had a decent amount of sheet metal mods, long travel, bumpers, bedlined interior, roof and sides. Maybe 8k to buy and build it.

What are these?

We have a '97 2Dr Chevy Tahoe LT 4x4 that my wife got brand new when she turned 16. It's in near stock condition and still looks great except for the paint on the hood which is nearly gone. It's amazing the number of people who ask us if we want to sell it. I've come to the conclusion that offoraders will ask anyone at any time if they want to sell something if it's a truck/vehicle they want to wheel.

But back to the OP's topic, I drive a lot of miles a year so I never buy myself a new car. Will buy my wife a gently used car and take it for myself when my car starts to die and the wife gets another new car (or rather gently used) car. Last new car was a '14 CX5 Grand Touring with technology package that stickered at 31k which we picked up with 8.6k miles last fall for $23,756. I tend to not back myself into a corner and NEED a vehicle (which is easy to do with a 3rd good running '96 Tahoe always around). That gives me the freedom to just look around for deals and jump on one when I find one.

I had a '94 nissan pickup when I graduated in '98. Kept a '94 Mitsubishi Galant I paid $1.2k for in 2000 with 89k miles and kept it until 2007 when it hit 260k and finally lost a cylinder. That puts me past 30 so that was my car buying history before my 30;s

You must like paying astronomical shop fees with that Range Rover. Especially a 2001 4.6 HSE.

The only new one I ever bought was at 29. Got 482,000 miles out of it. I won't waste that kind of money anymore, but it was a great investment.

OK, I'll bite, when is it better to take a huge depreciation hit 1 second after you sign?

When you buy a used vehicle and it drops it's transmission on your drive home from the title transfer signing. That would suck.

But you paid 40% less than the new

Not always true. My wife's VW TDI was first off a difficult find used. Anything under 50k miles was honestly only about 3k less. They actually had a used one on the lot same year that they were selling for like 1200 less than a new. Yes, it's still more money, but I'm not dealing with that to save 10 bucks a month on a note.

I've bought two new vehicles and one slightly used. It depends on the situation. My Tahoe was totally worth it to buy used. That thing depreciated big time.

I'm only 29. May not have been the best financial decisions, but I have a healthy savings, retirement, etc.. So, I'm not fretting over it.

In theory you can buy it one day and sell it the next for the same price. You didn't answer my question.

I bought a 2011 f150 a year ago with 36000 miles on it and I went to trade it in a month ago and they offered me what I bought it for after putting about 7k miles on it.

It's rather simple, years 2-5 have the lowest depreciation rates over the entire life of a car. That's the years you want to own the car because that's when it's going to lose the least of it's value. In addition to not taking that huge depreciation hit, you get buy another car every 3 years instead of every 5 years.

There's so right answer when it comes to new or used......every make, model, situation, etc is unique and anyone that tells you different is just repeating something their grand pappy told them or they read in a Dave Ramsey book.
