Maybe if gently used cars really were 40% cheaper than new, I'd buy used. But I don't want an old car, recent used ones are hardly a bargain, and I'm not buying the damn thing as an investment anyway. I buy it to use until it's wrecked or broken. And I love the tightness and smell of a new car. It's almost like a new pussy.

Let's see. Buy a new Tacoma for 30k or a Tacoma with 125000 miles for 20k. Yep. I'm buying new.

Bought a brand new Tahoe when I was 27. I am still driving it at 40.

Like you said, your biggest hit is taken when you sign, at least 15%. You then went on to say I'm paying 40% less for a two year old car than full price for brand new.
Seems like the biggest hit is in year two. Per your posts in this thread, without any links.
Yes, I know they depreciate heavily in the first few years. But if it's not a straight line, how can you say for sure that it's 15% the moment you sign, and definitely 40% less by year two?
Edited to fix 49 to 40%. Short thumbed the zero.

Let's say I bought a new vehicle 2 months ago, 2016 model. You buy the equivalent new version in 2019, assuming it's a three year old vehicle. I've actually gotten four years out of driving it. And depreciation over that 4 years will be less than 40%, sometimes much less if it's a Toyota.

I bought 3 new ones before I was 30. I also had 4 used cars, a Jeep, a car for the drag strip and 3 boats before 30.

Bought 3 new before I was 30. Civic, Covette Grand Sport then a truck.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot the 3 motorcycles I had before I was 30.

This is when you car take the biggest hit IMO

That first year really takes a chunk out of the resale value.
Posted on 9/14/15 at 9:56 pm to To the Dome
I had bought three houses before 30

I'm 26, about to get my 3rd new car in my name without a co signer. Have never had negative equity until this time (2k), but the 2016 tacomas I can not pass up.

If 3 years old is new then yes.

Yes obviously a 3 yr old car on a used car lot is considered new.

I buy really odd 4x4s anywhere from 25-5 years old, service them, put long travel suspension, bumpers, tires, then beat the piss out of them until I get bored or total them. Usually have under 10k in them total.
My current daily driver is 13 years old. A pretty popular SUV, but has some body mods. I usually get asked if I want to sell it at least once a week, more often during football season.
My last one was 26 years old and was one of only four in baton rouge (that I know of), I found notes on it a few times a week when I would park on campus. It had a decent amount of sheet metal mods, long travel, bumpers, bedlined interior, roof and sides. Maybe 8k to buy and build it.
Most important to me is reliability and never seeing another vehicle like mine.
I just can't spend 40k on a 4x4 I'm going to beat on in Moab, scratch to hell and back in louisiana woods, or park downtown/on campus.
At the same time, I also can't be embarassed to have it valeted or park in the claiborne garage.
