I believe Van Riebeek and the Boers purchased the land that would become the Cape Colony from the Khoikhoi in the early 1600s. However the British invaded and took over, which cause the Boers to start the Great Trek or Voortrek. In their great trek they were searching for land not claimed by anyone. This is how they found Vrystaat or Free State, meaning "the land was not claimed by anyone." They even traded with the nearby Zulu tribe until that tribe decided to kill their leader and slaughter the settlers. So yeah I do know some shite.

Work with guys from the RSA, one is here on shift with me now. They still have elderly relatives or distant family there although most have come here, gone to Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Most foresaw something like this happening eventually, thus the mass emigration of the 1990s & 2000s.

Worked with two Rhodesians years ago, both fine people. Squared away in every facet of their life - family, faith, work. It is no wonder people like them built a nation so prosperous. In two generations it was all destroyed by people demonstrably incapable of self governance. The RSA will be no different.
