Lower pay was not the reason illegals were driving.
Also, if you believe for moment that drivers bring in 100,000 plus a year, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.
Not sure I get your point?
On one hand, it seems like you say most truckers do a job that's extremely demanding and don't make great money doing it.
On the other, you seem to say illegals are not filling these jobs because of that issue.
I just said that truck driving may need to pay more to attract non-illegals for the exact reasons you say.

I've posted this before. When my BIL got out of the service he decided to give long haul trucking a try. The training went well and they gave him a route from Washington through Oregon down into northern California. His second solo run he got stuck on an iced up mountain road where he couldnt go forward or back without sliding. He caught a ride down the mountain to the nearest town and fedexed the keys to the company. That was the end of his trucking career.

was there anything stopping them from doing that job before?
I guess the illegal cartel kept them out of this field.

Not that we should have a bunch of non-English speaking truckers, but why should veterans in particular get preferences for the job over non-veterans? Shouldn't he just say that we need to replace these immigrant truckers with native born truckers?

Veterans get preference for all kinds of jobs. It's an incentive to enlist for a job that doesn't pay that much and is often dangerous in exchange for better opportunities when you get out.

8 out of 10 Uber drivers from rides last year were fresh off the boat.
The one local guy got hurt at work and trying to make ends meet. The other local was driving a brand new Tesla and did it for a full time job.
A couple of illegals drove like a bat out of hell, going 20-over at all times and rolling through stop signs as is typical in SA and other places. Was for sure we about to get pulled over a few times and be late for a flight.
Door dash, Uber, and Lyft are a jobs program for illegals. Wild that this is allowed.

Illegals took the jobs because the industry was begging for anyone to fill the positions. Illegals took the jobs thinking no skill is required to drive down the road. So, idiots that couldn’t handle 80,000 lbs, took to the road, unable to read or speak English, nor drive the rig they were in control off. I’ll venture to say the office people that hired unskilled drivers, should have been equally held accountable for the trash that took the field.
Truck companies nickel and dime drivers to death. The life style is miserable. No one sleeps in truck stops anymore, too noisy and too much shite going on. The happiest I ever was…hauling explosives and multi million dollar art exhibits. Otherwise, as I said. Seeing the world from a never ending highway is kin to the old saying “Join the Navy and see the world. 3/4 is covered with water.” Highways get tiring as well. Toss in idiots on four wheels…..have a ball and go broke doing so.

I get it. My brother has a very small trucking company and does driving himself. He now does more local routes since he has a kid but it's a lot less money.
What you say is kind of my point about getting more people to do the job. The pay needs to be a lot better.
From my brother's perspective with a small company that had 6 then 5 then 4 then 3 other drivers, he's getting squeezed in all directions as well.
The only people making a killing are huge trucking companies and the shareholders in the big companies getting their stuff hauled around.

Literally there is nothing to complain about with this concept. Idk about skipping certification processes, but I'd prefer such a veteran to a Hindu who can't read traffic signs.

Paging Horsemeat*
Veterans in their 20s and 30s trying to find their way and want to provide a middle America lifestyle for themselves. The trucking industry is ripe for Americans that love America.

The “preference” is for the ones that were in logistics/transportation/engineers that drive heavy equipment and trucks so they already have relative real world work experience.

Time for self-driving trucks.

We are removing more and more dangerous foreign drivers off our roads every day and restoring the integrity of America’s trucking industry,” Duffy said

I pissed off an uber driver in Hilton head last week. It sounded like fricking Nairobi in his car and he was blaring it.
I finally asked him to either change it, turn it down, or pause it. He got all butthurt about it.
frick them, this is a fricking English speaking country and I’m a white guy. Why the frick should I have to listen to that shite?.

My husband is the people-person and likes to ask the uber drivers their favorite bars or restaurants when we travel. Only in Miami has the one local guy give us a recommendation

Is there any money in hot shotting?

Just saw a GMC truck commercial 0% financing and 13,800 off of the sticker price.
Demand is down. You will need less truckers when we have less people.
