Do you still really consider Maryland to be southern? This isn't the era of having 13 colonies.

Miami

Not at all representative of the south.

Austin
San Antonio

Just because cities are big Texas cities does not make them representative of the south.

Kansas City, MO

Missouri is borderline southern

Louisville

lol, no.

Orlando

Again, doesn't really represent the south.

Atlanta, easily

Tennessee shouldn’t be in the conversation, so Nashville is out.

Then you go on to name Nashville?

Nashville seems to have more of a southern vibe than Atlanta.

Memphis is about as Southern of a city as you can get. Not necessarily a great trait, but it is true. It has that old, dirty, riverboat Southern town feel to it.

So Atlanta?

Way too many Northern and Western migrants to be considered a culturally Southern City

This is the dumbest thing Ive read on here so far. The south is a geographical region in this discussion. If we are judging by culcha it's definitely New Orleans and Atlanta

ETA: I retract my statement calling this the dumbest thing Ive read all day. The other reply listing Baltimore as a southern city takes the cake.

I have. It reminded me of New Orleans. Not as fun. Probably safer though

You included Austin and San Antonio, but not Dallas or Houston. This makes zero sense. You included a city in MARYLAND?! Missouri is the midwest. You have no mention of Atlanta which swamps any of the few legit southern cities you mentioned.

TLDR: Your opinion is invalid.

I hate to say this, but Atlanta. It is centrally located and the largest Metro in what we call the South.

Atlanta isn't the "most southern" city in the South but it's the biggest, most important city in the region by a fair margin. It's also near the top in almost every other category (historic significance, nationwide influence, sports, music, cuisine, etc.). You can reasonably argue is the only truly major city in the "true south" (not Miami, Texas cities, etc.).

When I see a question posed this way, I approach it from which city best reflects the characteristics known to be "Southern"

Regional borders are defined as the line between two geographical areas where the cultural norms shift/are different.

Why did we draw the culturally defined Northern/Southern border, Mason-Dixon line between MD and PA? Because the two states were culturally different.

One shared the norms that were defined as culturally "Northern" and the other was culturally "Southern"

Why is it "the 2nd dumbest thing you've read all day" that some people use a different metric than you to answer a hypothetical question?
