I remember growing up in BTR and having to watch out for stepping on stinging caterpillars, playing with tent caterpillars, and having to kill some big arse cockroaches for mama. Just thinking now, I haven't seen any of those childhood insects in over a decade... Just mosquitos and wasps. What happened?

Pill bugs (“roly poly”), stink bugs, lightning bugs, praying mantis...

I still see them around especially in wooded areas.

I would imagine that some bug populations in suburban areas have diminished due to the use of pesticides. I ask my bug guy to cross the streams when spraying around my house.

I don't see these nearly as much as I did when I was a kid, but I have seen them from time to time.

I know they are not insects, but they eat insects... But what about Geckos? It seems like one summer they just showed up and they would be everywhere under the breeze way in my back yard, when the lights went out. Then for the past 2 or 3 years, I haven't seen many of them.. If any at all.

well since 90% of the wooded areas are now concrete shopping centers and sub divisions they dont have as many, why is that surprising?

go in the woods and they are just as plentiful as ever but they dont live around concrete jungles

Not an insect, they are an isopod crustacean.

If you can’t have a roly poly boil then they are an insect.

Well we had a helluva hard winter, so I attribute the lack of caterpillars to that. As for the other bugs,I haven't noticed a decline at all. Did you notice the gnat invasion this past spring at all? I couldn't go outside without them biting. It was misery. I even had a huge vet bill for my dog getting hot spots due to gnat bites. I thought the gnats would never go away this year, and don't remember them being this bad ever.
If you have a vegetable garden, you know that the insect pest population is doing just fine. I had a bunch of bugs in my garden this year.
About the only insect I have noticed a huge decline in is the firefly population, and its drop is directly attributable to the mosquito abatement programs in the city.
Incidentally, I think the gecko population was hit hard by all the intense freezes last winter as well.

Actually, most of the time you're the bug.

The world wide use of cars and trucks is causing a world wide decline in flying insects. A 20% decline in insects has been noted within the past 30 years.

While it could be due to environmental factors, development, etc. When you were a kid you probably were outside riding a bike, climbing tress, and playing in the backyard a lot more. Probably.
