Because there are no honest responses yet, I'll at least try. I lived in NOLA about 4 years ago as a young professional in a condo in the Warehouse district for a while and also Uptown near Tulane.

I loved Uptown. I loved having tons of things to do within walking distance, and the street car made my trips downtown pretty easy. The house was old, but the rent was reasonable. There was a lot of reported crime, and on-street parking sucked (car got hit twice).

The warehouse district was also nice, but rent was out of this world. I would think you would do better solo in the WD than Uptown.

My sister chose to live in Mid-City and remained there. She says she wouldn't change it for the world (35 yrs old, no kids, professional).

Uptown or Lakeview. It depends what kind of lifestyle you enjoy.

Uptown within walking distance to the streetcar or Magazine bus line. Makes going downtown easy. WHD sucks because there aren't any front porches to sit on and drink.
