I have read that it is a holdover from slave days. I slave was taught to say “I stay at X plantation” when stopped on the road away from the plantation.

The origin of the hated phrase " where I stay" is rooted in a culture where children are shuffled from one relative to another throughout their juvenile lives and likely well after It indicates that the person has no real permanent address, that where he "stays" is temporary.

I have seen a witness in court draw a distinction between where he lives and where he stays. I wasn't clear on the difference, but he clearly saw one and tried to explain it.

French term is not "go shopping", it's faire marche'-- literally, to "make market", thus in many sections of Louisiana, one "makes groceries".
Same thing applies to sleep. In English, you GO to sleep. And you tell little babies to go "night-night". In French, you MAKE to sleep-- fais dormir. And you tell little babies to fais do-do, which is what parents did when they put the kids to bed in a back room at a big house party or barn dance with live music.
Thus just about any Cajun musical event with dancing has been come to be called a "Fais-Do-Do".
