agree. It's going to be awhile before people start feeling comfortable resuming normal activities.
We can say olds and other at risk groups should stay in quarantine, but they’re a YUGE part of the economy. 20-40 something year olds can’t do it themselves.

This is all BS anyway as the majority of hospitals aren't getting "creamed" as predicted.
Maybe not but the hospital workers are. We had a Doctor and Nurse shortage across the country before this thing started. Not having people available to treat you is just as bad as not having enough hospital beds.

And the poor decisions of some will delay this for all of us.
If you pack the bars for Cinco De Mayo, you're going to drive "normal" people away from resuming normal activities. What short-term gains are made from an initial burst of economic activity are going to be lost if middle class families sit things out because of the recklessness of some. And that's the best case scenario. The worst case scenario probably involves additional major outbreaks that shut everything down again.

The whole point of social distancing is to prevent the overload of the healthcare system. If you let everyone out, you will overload the healthcare system and more people will die than if you play out the longer route. If you want to end social distancing, you have to do something to lessen the burden on the healthcare system. For all those advocating an immediate opening, What are your plans to do that? How are we going to prevent overburdening our hospitals?

We are taking extraordinary measures to lessen the burden on the healthcare system. PPE manufacturing is in high gear and TONS of vents are being manufactured as well.
You want the curve to be below the amount of resources. Well we are doing everything we can to increase the amount of resources.

Reopen tomorrow and impose heavy tariffs on Chinese products. Use that money to repair the economy.

Open.
Recommend 65+ restrict their movements, also those with issues that we know are a problem....obese, diabetic, high blood pressure not controlled.
Get everyone else moving now.

And what if it takes until like June or even July to have enough rest kits?
Then that is an unfortunate reality.
If we keep this going that long, then we won’t have to worry about reopening everything because there will be nothing left to reopen. We will be in Mad Max/Walking Dead territory at that point.

Keep it shut. If not all of this will have been for nothing. Get past the peak, look at the real numbers and see what can be opened to prevent a drastic increase in number for the second peak.

How many businesses do you think can survive like this into the summer?

I agree.
To open up everything abruptly could undo everything at this point......Lets hit May and re-assess.

This is the slippery slope.
In Kentucky alone, you have (per CDC) 395,345 adults with asthma. Roughly another 100,000 more that are children. Approximately 531,646 adults in Kentucky have diabetes. As of 2018, Kentucky’s total population is 4.4 million. That’s a very large chunk of “at risk” people. And that’s not including state specific HBP stats.
On average in the US, 32.2% of people have HBP (definition: Have been told by a doctor they have high BP).

I am saying by May 1. Anyone still infected, or at risk, will need to quarantine for 2 more weeks.
I do think we need to continue to have social distancing as a new way of life, and stores are going to have to police the number of people allowed inside, and probably how long they stay.

People need to stop thinking everything is going to be opened back up “abruptly”
It will be done in phases
And that process should begin once we get 2 weeks of decline

A hell of a lot more than can survive if we are stupid and open everything back up only to have huge increases in deaths that force everything to shut back down. Why go back to step one if we can do this wisely?

That’s the Catch 22 of the situation. There are very few companies that can last like this if we continue as we are now into the summer. If we are still shut down by then, most companies will be done. We’re talking the complete economic collapse of the country. It will make the Great Depression look like a walk in the park.
Then what will we do?

Think you missed this. A complete economic collapse? We have been shut down and we are not even down to Obama level numbers.
