May 1st seems like a reasonable time to give it some time to start dwindling in numbers and at the very least open up businesses that want to open even if there are some limitations .. give them a chance to earn a living

Open it back up. Even if in small steps.
There is no reason why my office can't go back to having people in the office a couple of days a week. Set a schedule so you still have distancing, keep the tourists out still, open production back up.
We should be able to start that next week. If you have an underlying condition, continue working from home. If you have kids at home, continue working from home. But there is no reason why at least some of us can't go back into the office.

the idea that we can get a "handle on this virus" is sophistry. Its a virus. With no vaccine, we cant manage it. And all we can do is manage it with a vaccine. I'm still not sold on the idea of herd immunity as a management tool for this, but I think we are going to see it tested whether we want to or not. We simply cannot continue to confine people to their homes and crush the economy. That will be devastating to all, not just a few- like my own mother who is 82 and has the very health issues that Covid seems to lust for.

im hoping for a gradual opening of certain parts of the economy starting May 1 provided enough PPE, ventilators, medical supplies, testing, etc is in place.
We will be able to handle another outbreak if we have a system in place to deal with it that ALL 50 states are a part of and its not a "pool with a peeing section" scenario we have now.
Certain things like concerts, live sporting events, etc are going to be tough because you're talking about kickstarting another huge outbreak.
Hopefully large scale mask wearing(if feeling sick), more hand washing, sanitizing, etc becomes more culturally normal in America and we can prevent shite like this from getting out of hand next time.
I want to be hopeful but our population is pretty stupid, gross and selfish so who the hell knows.

I see the people on here who are me me me. Screw everybody else. Yes this sucks. But there are kids dying also. But I guess it doesn't matter if you have no conscious. Suck it up and think of other people. I'll eat hamburger helper for months if it saves lives.

I'm not sure about concerts, but sporting events can be televised. I realize that they will take a revenue hit, but you could charge for viewing in your home. I'm already paying $30 a month for an MLB package that I'm not getting. The Dodgers have already fricked over most of their hometown viewing market by going exclusively with one cable company.
There are ways for entertainers and sports clubs to generate some revenue while still not fully opening arenas.

Your health, safety, and well being are not
My responsibility. My imperative is to try not to harm you. You are responsible for your health and safety as I am for mine. Right now, my safety and well being are being damaged by group think that believes we are a collective instead of individuals responsible for our own selves. The sooner you understand this, the sooner we all get back to taking care of ourselves. And that makes the whole community safer and stronger.
And as of 3/30/20, only two people under 18 had died from Covid. Not sure where you’re getting your stats from on children.

Good Lord they should take away your internet access for being soo dramatic while ignorant in one single post.
No one here is asking to directly sacrifice lives for dollars. It’s a multi factor decision that must be very carefully made and made differently for different parts of the country, because if we open too fast it could lead to a dramatic spike and if we stay shut down for another month as we are now it will cause a global depression. Of which could impact millions, not thousands as in COVID19.

You still think this a money vs lives scenario. But it’s not. We are not there yet, but soon we will reach a point where it’s lives vs. lives, namely how many people die in the virus minus how many die as a result of economic collapse. I know you’re picturing what the virus can do. But have you stopped to think what the greatest depression the country has ever experienced will do?
