I work for an essential business. We can’t shut down so we took every precaution possible to protect people. Those who can work from home are allowed to but most can’t so they go in. So far so good.
But the average small business owner has very few options. And at some point he won’t be able to afford to stay in business. If that was me I’d want to risk my health to stay afloat.

I honestly don’t understand how people aren’t seeing it. It’s like they can’t wrap their mind around the concept that business cannot remain open without some sort of revenue stream. And I’m not just talking the local bar & grill. People are not buying cars, houses, and major appliances. The entire economy is virtually in a coma. It can’t be sustained. Either we open it soon or we won’t be able to open it at all.

I never wanted the shutdown. I’d trade the millions of dead from the virus from the hundreds of millions saved via not speeding up a totalitarian govt even if I was one of the millions dead.

I don’t know how many are going to buy those things if they were open 
some people have one income now and used savings so it may be a while anyway . As for local Bar and Grill, not sure many folks are going to jump right back in a setting like that until numbers go way down or there is a vaccine . Going to be a slow process

Plenty of people will. People are already tired of staying at home as it is. A vaccine is not happening for another year.

Oh yea, people are tired of it but realize this is serious too. Wife and I walked the neighborhood yesterday and had this very conversation with people out in yards, walking , etc. Obviously a small sample size but everybody we talked to was still distancing and staying home . Hell I went to the local Dollar General and was one of the few without a mask and gloves
nobody was saying a word , it was creepy

It was not a good move to shut things down for this particular virus. It has shown itself to be extremely contagious and will continue to spread despite any efforts by a nation with 330 million people.
I think it will eventually infect every one of us. The idea of the shutdown was to “flatten the curve” of increase so that hospitals could handle the influx of severe cases. It’s hard to say that that has actually happened.
In high density areas of the country, the virus has been infecting people exponentially, despite the precautions taken. In my opinion, the shutdown has had a minimal effect and has just prolonged the inevitable.
If we had been prepared, it might have been different. However, as things stand now we should open society back up and take our chances. There will be no vaccine or “miracle cures” that will stop all of us from contracting it. The virus caught the world off guard and we will pay a heavy price because of that.
It could have been much, much worse. A novel flu strain would have killed hundreds of millions before a vaccine could have been created and distributed.

For some perspective, the highest unemployment rate during the Great Depression was 24%.
It took us a decade and a World War to break out of the Great Depression. During that time 12 million Americans died as as a result of the Great Depression.
Is that what you want? Because unless we open things up soon, what’s coming will be worse.

A whole lot of people (both on this board and in the wider world) got a hell of lot more good with a prolonged shutdown when the government said that they were passing a two trillion dollar stimulus package and would make sure everybody got paid immediately and this would all really just be like a three or four month long paid vacation for everybody.
It ain't quite working out that way so far so we'll check back in on the first of May...especially if that money still isn't coming down the pipe.
