I ran a 40 about 7 years ago and totally pulled my hammy. Never again.

My goal was/is to get my 800 meter sprint as close to 3 mins as possible. My first one was 3:30, then 4:00, 4:02, and 4:12.
If you didn’t “sprint as hard as you could” for a portion of the 800 your times would probably be better

Any 50+ guys want to run a 40? I was sub 5 in the 80’s.

An 800m race is not a sprint. Not even for an Olympian. It's a highly technical distance with multiple stages.

The last time I remember was maybe 7 years ago when I got super high and had to walk back to my house from the opposite side of the square around 4 am. Got paranoid that I was being followed and frickin booked it.

2013 I think. A young Asian girl goaded me into a foot race when I was not completely sober. For being like 11 she talked a lot of shite. I thought I’d jog along with her and then let her “beat me”. I overestimated my speed and underestimated her’s. After about three seconds I realized I’d have to legit sprint in order to carry out my plan. Instead of saying frick it I decided I’d let it rip. It was dark and I stepped on these tree roots and rolled the hell out of my ankle. I retired from sprinting after that shameful moment.

An 800 isn't a sprint, chuckle nuts!

I’m old and have never really run before. Doing what I can and training on my own. The improvement from where I started until now is amazing to me. It’s nothing for me to run 6 miles at a pace that I couldn’t sustain over a 1/4 mile when I started.
I think this says more about the OT than me. There are people here that can’t believe someone can sprint for a 1/2 mile. In my last race, a 50+ year old woman ran 13 miles with a 6:56 min pace.

I’m 33. I just started jogging every couple of days. I’m beyond out of shape. I’m seemed like yesterday I was at the LSU Rec Center playing basketball for hours without feeling fatigued. Now, I coukdnt even get up and down the court.

I was a letter winner at LSU competing in events from 800m-10000m so I may have a modicum of knowledge in the arena. No one can sprint for 800m. Not even the world record holder. He averaged 50.45 per 400m in his record. He can run 45 seconds for a 400–since his average pace for 800 is slower than his 400m max, he is by definition not sprinting.
But it’s okay because no one can sprint 400m, either.

I do speed work at 80 seconds per quarter mile, but that’s not nearly a full on sprint

Your runnin 80s at 57 yrs old?
Dude. That's elite for your age group if your 5k time translates to ~17:50
You fibbing us? 90 sounds more realistic for a fit 57 yr old.

Think it says more about your lack of understanding what “sprint” means
Keep crushing those 4 minute 800s though

Exactly, people who didn't play football/track have no understanding what a true 40 or 100 yard dash is. It is not possible for a human to do a true shrine more than 100m or so. Even a 200 it's not a true sprint in the sense a 100m is.
But to answer your question OP, I do a true sprint workout, racing the neighbor in the 40 once or twice a week.
I used to run them by myself, but he started working out when me last March and after he got in good enough shape we slowly started ramping intensity and racing. I could beat him every time up until a month or so ago. Now he is smoking my arse lol.
For reference I am 37, he is 34. I am faster now than in high school and have a much better vertical along with being much stronger.
But I have been doing jumps with new 531 program I am doing. My lateral jumping or any bounding is like WTF, so uncoordinated in that.
For the record I try and train like an athlete and it has served me very well, especially compared to my peers.

Ran as hard as I could soon as they opened the doors the last time I went to Crab Legs nite at the Chinese buffet. Hey, it's not for wimps.
