He'll miss it.
I did the same thing whenever I was 12. But my freshman year of highschool I was at a friend's house and saw him playing catch with his dad. That right there made me miss it; practiced the next 3 months and made the highschool team.

Remember, the commitment is about him and not you.
We have identical twins in 8th grade and one of them has decided to forego football. The other is full steam ahead. His personality doesn't suit the aggressive nature needed and I actually think its best for him.
That said, we have made it very clear he is expected to invest his time in other extra curricular activities. He and his brothers are in Scouts and on the Eagle track.....we will expect him to ramp up his Scouting time investment as well as adding in AP classes. More time in front of a screen ain't happening!

Exactly...he became a southpaw throwing Heisman contender by not playing a sissy sport like baseball and concentrating on a sport he liked and could excel at.

My older boy loves all sports. My youngest not really. He wants to play baseball this year, but I have to force him out in the yard to practice. He is not real good for his age and needs extra work to be good enough to not embarrass him self.
I figure he will want to stop soon enough. It really isn't a big deal.
As a father of 3 I would offer that you find the off switch to the electronics if you are fed up with them.
You don't die if they are mad at you for 15 minutes.
