Usually when a spouse dies, the other spouse has usufruct of the assets, unless specified that the assets go 100% to the spouse in a will. In this case, the stepmother has access to the property and shouldn’t be able to sell or give it away without the children of the deceased permission because it’s legally 50% theirs.

I had the same thing happen to me. Had 1 3/4 acres promised to me from my mom when I was ready to build a house. Over the years I would check on it for trespassing and dumping. On one trip I see it’s cleared and prepped for building. I confront my mom and she plays stupid saying she sold it the years prior. I said WTF? She used the money on my sister. I haven’t spoken to her in 7 years.

Who gave it to my Grandfather.
Who gave it to my dad. (Who is passed in 2014)
Now in the ownership of stepmother, who now has put it in her will it goes to her daughters..
But no one sure told me that when I was bulldozing brush, building ponds and cleaning up these past 25 years.
The only way I can even describe my feelings is just imagine you paid child support for 20 years, only to be told in the end the child wasn't yours at all.
Very sick today.. But at least I now know the truth.
I will pray about it and I know God will give the right answers..
Just posting because I just need someone to talk to.. I know the OT is the right place for that.
Just so you know you're not alone.
TLDR: my wife and her brothers are 1 generation removed from 300+ acres of prime central Texas land. Not only is the land sold, every dollar now effectively belongs to their stepmom.

Something extremely shady happened here.

Damn, I bet it gets worse when you think about your stepsister watching you labor and sweat preparing her land for her all those years.
Did she ever at least bring you some iced tea or offer a sandwich during your efforts?

I think they call this “getting Rita Benson Leblanced”.

If this is in Louisiana--and this is one area where Louisiana is better than most states--then either it is your land or else your dad did you dirty. Land your dad inherited from your grandfather would have been your dad's separate property. If he died without a will, then it would go to you and any other children of your dad, not his wife or stepchildren. If he died with a will, the only way it could go to his wife / your stepmother is if your dad willed it to her. Maybe you should talk to a lawyer who specializes in wills and estates.

My advice is don’t stay bitter. It’s ok to understand what happened, but don’t dwell on it.

Sorry to hear. I am in the real estate industry, and I see it almost weekly. The dynamics of families today are vastly different than what they were 30 or 40 years ago. Always, even more so with family & friends get it in writing. It protects all involved parties.

It happened to my wife with items specifically left to in her mother's will. The executrix and her far leftist brother said that Katrina destroyed some and that the jewelry was not there. After her brother ate a bullet I found the jewelry he had hidden and correspondence with an auction company in Chicago. Good thing that he was too lazy to follow through

All the above questions can be answered by looking at the succession of your fathers estate.
At the time of his death in 2014 if he owned "Real" property and he did normally one of his children or his spouse would have opened his succession in their name and probated his estate.
Was this ever done?
Assuming he died intestate, meaning without a will, and if this occured in Louisiana everything he owned is split 50/50 between his children and his wife.
The wife has usufructuary rights over some of the propery until her death or if she remarries.
Assuming you're in Louisiana the only way you don't legally own at least 50% of this property is if your father left a will that explicitly excluded you from inheriting any of his property.

I feel your pain man, if I’d known it would’ve turned out the way it did I would’ve took my Stepmonster in the lake and let the gators eat.
